This was one of the best gritty, raw punk rock albums ever.

    1979 and all that....

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 30, 2001

Was the year when many new bands suddenly appeared on the UK pub scene, and the Pretenders were one of the best of those to emerge then.Their debut album here is class punk, rock...whatever, throughout. The album bristles with aggression, anger, rese...ntment, passion and cynicism, courtesy of the highly talented Chrissie Hynde, a hard-headed American lady who decided to pack her bags in Ohio in the mid '70s, and head for the UK, from where she's never looked back since. The standout track on this album, is "Private Life", a bitter song set to a reggae beat, which is truly quite amazing. But the whole album is quite varied, so it never gets boring, and the other tracks are all strong.Although the Pretenders have always been a vehicle for Chrissie Hynde's songs, you cannot take anything away from the other members of the band who play so well together, and with total conviction. A tremendous start, and highly recommended.m06een00 Read more Less

    punk-rock masterpiece

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 3, 2001

That may sound like an oxymoron but it's true for this album. God, this album absolutely blew my mind when I first heard it. Too bad that their later stuff sucks in comparison.

    Edgy Rock Masterpiece

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 2, 2000

The Pretenders burst on the scene with this explosive debut in 1980. Side one is more or less a concept piece, and the concept is: raw, sweaty, dangerous sex. Propelled by a pounding rhythm section and slashing guitars, Chrissy Hynde purrs, sneers, ...cajoles, and berates her way through just about the most riveting set of tunes ever to grace vinyl. Side two slows down and sweetens up, with Nick Lowe's signature production sound on "Stop Your Sobbing" and "Kid." The new-wavy "Brass In Pocket" was the breakout hit, and the least Pretenders-like song on the album. This album is an absolute classic. Read more Less
