It Was a Good Play
When I first bought "The Predator", it took a little getting used to it. Cube sounded less angry and bombastic on this album than on the "Kill at Will" EP and on "Amerikkka's Most Wanted." (Less N.W.A. influence?) Cube's songs sounded more rhythmic than his first two solo efforts. The album grew on me with repeated listening, though. "When Will They Shoot", "Now I Gotta Wet 'Cha", and "The Predator" showed that Cube's anger hadn't melted, while, despite sounding more commercial, I still dug "It Was a Good Day" (original version, not the re-mix as much) and "Check Yo Self"--I'm glad 2 versions are on this album. I like "The Message Re-mix" better, however. The beat is a classic--word to Grand Master Flash and the Furious 5. (And DAS EFX still sounded fresh!) Yes, Cube mellowed (for him) musically--just about anything sounds mellow compared to "Amerikkka's Most Wanted" or "Kill at Will"--but this album was and is still a solid Ice Cube. His anger, wit, and mic skills still came through.
