pOpstArkiDs emerged from New York City's downtown underground scene in 1999. The brainchild of guitarist/singer Andee, the project started as a collection of his four-track demos, which featured a sort of quirky lo-fi electronic pop. Andee teamed up with another local musician, Anthony Pops, and recorded the first pOpstArkiDs album as a duo in late 1999. The album, titled This Is pOpstArkiDs, was released independently in early 2000 and became a college radio hit, charting in CMJ's Top 200 for nine weeks. The song "Break Yr Bones" was featured on MTV's animated Daria series and other songs from This Is pOpstArkiDs appeared on various TV shows.
pOpstArkiDs became an active band in the N.Y.C. underground club circuit after it debuted at CMJ's Music Marathon in October of 2000, featuring the lineup of Andee on lead vocals and guitar, Johnny B. on bass and vocals, Glenn "G" on synthesizer and vocals, and Pete Angel on drums. The band's second album, The Rise and Fall of pOpstArkiDs, was released in early 2001 and continues in the same vein as its predecessor. pOpstArkiDs takes the combined influences of the Cure, Jane's Addiction, Prince, and the B-52s and filters it through a modern, electronic production style.
