Poodle Hat
, May 13, 2003Reviewer: alfrede55 - See all alfrede55's reviews10 of 11 Yahoo! Users found this Poodle Hat review helpful Possibly Weird Als best work, parodies of Lose Yourself by Eminem,I Want It That Way by Backstreet Boys, Hot In Here by Nelly and Complicated by Avril Lavigne. Plus Billy Joel parody, a tribute to Frank Zappa (with special guest Dweezel Zappa) and a homage to the songs of Bob Dylan. Great CD, hope theres a video. -

, May 23, 2003Reviewer: Chris Skarstad - See all Chris Skarstad's reviews9 of 10 Yahoo! Users found this Poodle Hat review helpful below youll find what Im hoping is an entertaining and informative review. This new release has 12 tracks on it, all some of Als best stuff. Lets go through all 12 tracks, shall we? Ok, lets. 1. Coutch Potato...this is a parody of Eminems #1 hit Lose Yourself. Al talks about all the crazy stuff on tv now. I give this one 10 out of 10.
2. Hardware store...This is an original. I give al lots of credit on this one because hes able to sing all those lyrics so fast. I give it 9 out of 10.
3. Trash Day...This is a parody of Hot In Herre by Nelly. Not one of my very faves by Nelly but Al makes it good. You may never think of taking out the trash quite the same again.
I give this one 9 out of 10.
4. Party At The Lepper Colony...This is another original. Lyrics are great and the song is actually really good! I also give this one a high rating, 8 out of 10.
5. Angry White Guy Polka...ah, its the Obligatory Polka Medley. It wouldnt be a Weird Al album without one, hes been doing it for years. Gotta love System of a Down done Polka Style! Too funny! 10 out of 10.
6. Wanna Be Ur Lovr...I think this is my least fave song on the album. I dunno, it just didnt grab me like the others. 6 out of 10.
7. A Complicated Song...This is a parody of Complicated, another number 1 hit by Avril Lavigne. I like that song which is what made this song even funnier. The lyrics to this one made me bust out laughing so I definitely give this one 10 out of 10. Nicely done.
8. Why Does This Always Happen To Me...Another original and the lyrics again are really good on this one. Typical al original material. 9 out of 10.
9. Ode To A Superhero...A Parody of Billie Joels Classic Piano Man, and very nicely done at that. If youre a fan of the movie Spiderman as I was, youll like it even more. 10 out of 10.
10. Bob...this is what Ill call a style Parody. Everyone knows that nobody can understand Bob Dylans singing anymore. I originally thought that Al was just singing random words and phrases til a friend of mine rightly pointed out that all the words he uses in the lyrics are palendromes. A very creative and original idea. 10 out of 10.
11. Ebay...A parody of BSBs I Want it That way. Excellent Lyrics, instrumentation and all around good. 10 out of 10.
12. Genius In France...This is my all time favorite song on the album. Im a Zappa freak and I think that Frank is probably smiling up there. Al is obviously a Zappa fan as well, so he took great pains to make this sound *exactly* like a song Frank might do and he is dead on. Franks son Dweezele, adds a nice guitar sound to this particular gem, and I think its the icing on the cake. I fully realize that some people arent gonna get it. But for those who do, we love it. Overall, I give this disc a solid 10 out of 10. Nice song choices, well crafted and after all these years youd think thered be nothing to do parodies about. But as long as theres pop culture, music and other things, Weird Al will be right there to put it all in perspective for us. Go out and buy this cd. Its wworth it! ...

Pro Reviews: Poodle Hat
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews It's been said that artists will truly know they've entered pop culture when Weird Al Yankovic records a parody of their hit. But what does it mean when pop culture is ahead of Weird Al? Take his parody of the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way," which Yankovic turns into "Ebay," but his satire is not far removed from the auction website's own advertising campaign of 2003, where people rave about the junk they bought on eBay to the tune of "My Way" ("I did it eBay"). What does this mean? Well, that Weird Al Yankovic's sensibility has been so thoroughly assimilated by mass culture that it's tougher than ever for him to stay ahead of the game. For instance, there's his parody of Eminem's "Lose Yourself," for which Marshall Mathers refused to let Alfred Matthew Yankovic make a video -- an event that gave Poodle Hat a lot of press upon its spring 2003 release. The album ends with "Genius in France," a multi-part epic that's equal parts Utopia-era Todd Rundgren, Frank Zappa, and They Might Be Giants; it's the most ambitious and weirdest thing here, which counts for a lot, ending with a Grey Poupon joke. It works because, at his best, Weird Al is a very good musician with some clever ideas and a skilled band, so music that showcases that is best for him -- it helps put his jokes across. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |
