Pro Reviews: Polka Comes to Your Haus!
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews This is certainly a varied and somewhat disjointed representation of how polka has forced itself upon modern pop music. The results vary from accommodating and complimentary to indifferent and downright ghastly. Brave Combo, the ambassadors of modern polka (and other music forms), contribute two selections including "Do Something Different" in their inimitable alt-polka-pop/rock manner. The Romaniacs from Canada perform "Ecstasy of the Martyr" on acoustic bass acoustic guitar and fiddle incorporating an authentic Eastern European gypsy flavor. Novelty tunes are well-represented here as well courtesy of Das Furlines singing "Nichts Nein Frankenstein" and Mark Shurilla the Blackholes' "Blitzkrieg Over Kenosha" sung to the melody of the kitschy Slim Whitman/Bobby Vinton/George Baker hit "(Una) Paloma Blanca." Rotondi is an engaging outfit who combines pop, rock, polka, and ska as their "Blue Polka" suggests. Forgettable contributions to this collection belong to the Wallets and particularly to Polish Muslims whose pieces sound overly contrived, perhaps serving merely to facilitate a hasty completion to this compilation. Among the most interesting arrangements here are found on the three Polkacide numbers, "Martha Polka," "Favorite Polka," and "Butterfly Polka." They are an enigmatic bunch fronted by a punk vocalist, a wandering horn section, and a rhythm section that is neither polka nor punk but a little of each. Most importantly they possess a collective appreciation for and irreverence toward polka music. - Dave Sleger, All Music Guide |
