    Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 31, 2006

    Pros: Finally something new

Cons: A few little things that don't fit or are annoying.

This newest game is really a lot of fun. You play as one of 16 chosen pokemon and you pick a partner, one of the 9 starters from the previous games or pikachu. Together, you form a rescue team and go around saving other pokemon from the strange natur...al disasters that have been occuring lately in the pokemon world. The Good: This game has lots of new things to do. As a pokemon you level, learn new attacks, find and buy items and tms, and recruit other pokemon to your team. The gameplay is well set up and interesting, and the dungeon feel gives you something new to look forward to each time you finish a quest. The graphics are wonderfully detailed with newly added facial pictures when pokemon talk to you. (They even have emotions, like a tearful charmander or an adoring caterpie). To recruit new pokemon you have to buy their "friend area". This is a little place where the pokemon can live when you're not teamed with it. You can also receive friend areas from quests, making it a bit harder to recruit the pokemon you want. The plot is also something new. You are a human who wakes up as a pokemon with no memory but your name and that you are NOT a pokemon. At the same time the pokemon world is being beseiged by strange natural disasters. Earthquakes, fissures opening out of nowhere, floods and storms. And a strange rumor of the tale of the Ninetales curse... The Bad: Ok, this game is very much worth playing but there are a few things that really detract from it. Let us pray they make another one and fix these little details. You can't evolve until you beat the game. This was the main thing that threw me off. Yay! I'm level such and such now I.... wait, nothing happened. huh? This makes it a pain to play pokemon such as Eevee who only reach their full potential after you choose an evolution. There is a way though. Rare items called "doom seeds" can unlevel your pokemon. So you can evolve it then take it down to level say, 10. Then you can relearn all the moves you want, etc. Lack of inventory space!! This was the next thing that drove me up a wall and screaming. You can only carry 20 items with you at a time and only throwable items and such can stack. That's right, if you bring 20 healing oran berries, your inventory is STUFFED. There is a storage area in the main town of the game, but you have to go back and forth to keep yourself stocked. Finally, belly. In the game you get hungry and this can cause you to faint in a dungeon if you don't eat something. Some people won't like this because belly goes down when you walk, attack, use items, etc. And with limited inventory it's hard to keep your belly full in large 20-30 floor dungeons. Right beside the belly is the new kill to all powerlevelers, the "mysterious wind of doom". Ok, they don't call it that in the game, but that's what it looks like. If you plan to sit in a dungeon and wait for all the pokemon to come to you so you can beat them up for the experience, you'll find you have a sort of "timer" in most dungeons. If you stay on a floor in a dungeon long enough you will be swept out of the dungeon by a huge wind. If you DO want to powerlevel though, find the stairs, hold down the speed up buttons and just kill things. As soon as "something is stirring" scoot up those stairs. So, this game has a few bad things to it but it IS the first of its kind. And, most of the bad things are balanced out by ways to get around them, (doom seeds etc), so it's still a fun game to play. I heartily recommend this game as one of the best pokemon games to come out since, well, Yellow! Read more Less

being a Pokemon, a new difference

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 28, 2006

Pros: an easier way to catch all 386 Pokemon!

Cons: may not appeal to fans of the original Pokemon RPGs

What if you woke up one day and you were a Pokemon? The question that is asked everywhere about Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Well, in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, the main story is one day you wake up in a world that is only populated with Pokemon (and they ...talk, and you're able to understand them) and you have become one of 16 availiable starting Pokemon such as Pikachu, Charmander, and even Meowth. You join your new partner Pokemon and form a rescue team, and figure out the mystery of why you became a Pokemon in the first place. You take a Personality Test when you first start the game, and the answers you choose determines your Pokemon. After that, you get to choose who your main partner would be. If you don't like your Pokemon choice the game made you, just reset, and pick different answers, and note that some Pokemon are only available to some genders (Meowth, male, Eevee, female) and you may have to lie a little bit to be a Pokemon of your choice. As a Pokemon on a rescue team, you'll have to recruit Pokemon on your team by battling them through dungeons, and depending what rank you are it gets alot easier to recruit members. And a plus, legendaries can be recruited too, and you don't have to go to any Nintendo event either! Some fans of the regular Pokemon RPGs may not find this appealing, but for others it turned out to be a hit! I liked it myself! Read more Less
