    This is the album that put John Denver in the spotlight and in the Top 40. The tracks are stripped down to the bare minimum-guitars, bass, percussion, occasional piano. John was still trying to figure out exactly how he would pass his message on to ...the masses (his previous album was, by John's own admission, his least favorite). The folk sound of this era would soon pass on to Country/Western, which would pass on to Easy Listening (John transcended genres often-he hated any type of labeling). For now, folk was the form, and it served him well. Plently of hits are on this album (Take Me Home, Country Roads, Sunshine On My Shoulders, My Sweet Lady, the title track) and the lesser-known songs are every bit as notable (Gospel Changes, I Guess He'd Rather Be In Colrado) With John's death in the not-too-distant past, it's difficult to listen to 'Around and Around' without getting choked up. Some of the material is overdone (Wooden Indian, Let It Be) but they doesn't detract from the experience. Highly recommended for both the fans and the casual listener. Read more Less
