Pros: Johnny Guitar Watson style intact. Good energy and fun!

Cons: Drum Machine out of place with great musician

Rufftown Records must have found some later demos by the late Johnny Guitar Watson. It's mostly good stuff---a "must have" for fans of Watson and a "should have" for fans of funky blues. Watson's trademark blues guitar a...nd funky good style are intact, along with his flair for lyrical philosophical storytelling. He samples Carl Carlton's "Bad Mamma Jamma" in one song on this set---as usual, coming up with something unexpected. The title track is strong and some of the interludes leave the listener wanting more. I only have three criticisms: 1. The drum machine in place of a musician with a drum kit is out of place. Johnny must have been on a shoestring budget during the sessions. 2. Rufftown could have come up with much better liner notes, more information on the music (such as when it was recorded) and photos/info on Watson. 3. I wish it was longer! The set gives good vibes and leaves you wanting more. All in all, it's well worth the price and a good addition to any jazz/blues/eclectic collection. Read more Less
