    toubles with Music

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 14, 2001 | 2 out of 2 found this Play review helpful

Moby is able to capture doubt and mystery on this record, along with his dubious insertion into pop royalty. He doesn't seem any different -he's still as strange as before. The record stays with Moby's fasination with Christian morality, and the mu...sic is more aural and more ambient in quality. A triumph for a great musician, and this is a great record. MOBY goes X-Files

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 16, 2000 | 1 out of 1 found this Play review helpful

My last dose of Moby was back in the Twin Peaks days. Moby's addition, "My Weakness", to the X-Files episode shown on 2/13/00, "Closure II", totally captured the scene of Mulder hugging his dead "ghost" sister. Admittedly, the scene coupled with Mob...y's music sent chills down my spine as I envisioned I too was there with agent Mulder. Moby's entire album is "My Weakness" Read more Less

Knowing the tricks of the trade

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 5, 2006

Pros: Simplicity, right samples for the right songs

Cons: Hardly groundbreaking, too many "filler" tracks

Sure Play is good album and made for a pleasant change when it came out several years ago. But being a musician myself who has been a 'synth-geek' since the mid 1980s and all the know the tricks of the trade, this album left me feeling a bit ...let down. I purchased it on the back of listening to the excellent 'Porcelain' and the stirring 'The Sky is Broken' and 'My Weakness' after hearing them used perfectly in episodes of The X-files. I still struggle to believe that this album received all the hype it did. The style of music included in 'Play' had already been done years earlier by countless 'bedroom producers' including myself for nearly a decade prior. I guess Moby was fortunate to have some corporate heavys behind him?! I guess Im one of these poor souls who as being a electronic musician and producer for nigh on 20 years, that I have to dissect the 'science' beinhd the music rather than listen to it for simply what it is... However I know that Im not the only one like that, and therefore am writing this review. This is not sour grapes, as I like this album and respect Moby and his work. However, he merely is the representative of so many excellent electronic musicians out there, who for one reason or another aren't fortunate enough to have corporate / company backing. The album is too long, and packed full of 'filler' tracks, that are nothing more than 'demos' that Moby spend just an hour writing and recording. In fact some of the sampling work on the album is also rather messily executed. Despite these shortcomings, I will admit there are moments of brilliance on the album such as "Porcelain", "BodyRock" and "My Weakness" to name just 3. However, I think another Yahoo reviewer summed it up perfectly, by saying "I used to think this album was awesome, til I bought a great synthesizer". I think this album is more groundbreaking with respect to marketing and publicity than its content. Dont get me wrong, Moby has done well here with his simple and honest delivery of his songs, but it is hardly a piece of groundbreaking or overly original material. Read more Less

    Pros: magical

    Cons: nada

Listen to "My Weakness" enough said. If you like that song also listen to "God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters" from his "I like to score" cd, its just as compelling.

An amazing album that makes most other electronic music look like amatuers. So many of the songs are truly masterful, a work of art in art`s original form.
    Excellent work

    Still actual...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 31, 2001

... and why should Moby be bothered about it anyway? 'Play' is dragging our stereos for sometime now and there is something peripheral about it, though it makes a good pop record in the mainstream business. Still this is one of his albums where 'play... for sure' is more evident with exact targets and even more exact shots, more than ever before (or after probably). With only fact his creativity has been driven to the edge... nothing since 'Play' he released as current material. Die-hard fans should be greatful for the b-sides compilation while the best of Moby (>) doesn't make something of a stunning effort. Just a simple retrospective. Read more Less
