Curtis Gordon was a hitless major label country artist of the '50s whose music is so much fun it's hard to believe he isn't better known. "Mobile, Alabama" and "Rompin' and Stompin'" are only two of the many lost classics that appear among the 34 tracks on Play the Music Louder, which draws from Gordon's vintage recordings for RCA, Mercury, and Dollie. The music ranges from proto-rock and rockabilly to teen-oriented ballads and hillbilly novelties, most of which are good and some of which are great. As Gordon fished around for a hit he tried a myriad of different approaches and singing styles, which makes for fascinating variety but not a very identifiable sound. If you count yourself among the cult of '50s country fanatics you can't go wrong with this one.
