So much less complicated than so many of the overblown productions of today that it makes for fun and relaxing viewing. Extremely interesting to watch 30 years after first seeing the series air on network television, as an adult you have a totally different perspective of each episodes message. I still think the makeup and costumes are more interesting from the 60's and 70's than today.
this collection is a must for many apes fans,It has great stories plenty of action!Fun to watch. The series did beter in syndication then its friday night time slot when it first aired, the sci fi channel has shown the series in the early nineties and had good ratings.Ron Harper and James Naughten are very likeable astronaughts!Wish they had more episodes. This forgoten treasure was made possible on dvd when many fans wrote to FOX and called including myself. Its rarely on tv at all.Pick this up you, will be glad you did
Until the recent revival and update courtesy of Tim Burton "Battle Of The Planet Of The Apes" was the final chapter in cinema for this science fiction arc. Although few realize it CBS brought the franchise to television for the first time in 1974 and despite the rabid response from those whose taste was also for its predecessors on the big screen the ratings were not enough to sustain this show past fourteen installments. Perhaps there was far too much pressure on "Planet Of The Apes" because of stiff competition elsewhere since it ran opposite to "Chico And The Man" "Sanford And Son" and "The Six Million Dollar Man". Regardless of what the scenario was that sunk this series after its brief span the episodes which comprise "Planet Of The Apes" on television are with enough appeal despite uneven execution which in turn was no doubt due to the intention by the network to target children. The show did in points match the appearance of its immediate inspiration on film and the late Roddy McDowall provides such continuity in the role as Galen. Also in use was political commentary yet if the principal message on film was to emphasize the self detructive characteristics inherent in man then its small screen equivalent by contrast highlights achievement by man through intelligence. Perpaps James Naughton and Ron Harper as astronauts Burke and Virdon respectively were without the impact of Charlton Heston as Taylor yet the style by both was suitable for the message each episode relays. Finally there is Mark Lenard who many "Star Trek" afficianados recognize as Sarek and therefore gives additional incentive for the potential audience unfamiliar with this forum to witness here as the gorilla general Urko. After nothing except inferior bootlegs available to this fans can now rejoice by the wise decision by 20th Century Fox to release "Planet Of The Apes" which was successful in syndication even if not in its first run. Do you think "Chico And The Man" "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "Sanford And Son" will inspire such demand?
