While Planes Mistaken for Stars' angst- and adrenaline-fueled post-hardcore is effective in pulling the listener down deep into the band's personal morass of longing and failure, the group rarely develops a solid hook on this self-titled EP to make their diatribes memorable. Dutifully employing all of the standard emocore devices -- ragged guitars, violent stop-start dynamics, and occasional touches of light and shade (as on "Standing Still Fast") -- PMFS certainly are in no danger of being called sellouts. But a dash of melody and coherent song-structuring would go a long way toward making a more lasting impression. Furthermore, the arrangements -- which have a cut-and-paste randomness -- are jarring to the point of sabotaging the songs' momentum.
