Better than any other Pink Floyd album

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 5, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Piper at the Gates of Dawn (Remastered) review helpful

As far as I'm concerned, Syd Barrett was Pink Floyd and when he left PF left with him. Waters-led Floyd was pompous and dull. This album is brilliant; the only bad track is Chapter 24, aside from that, it's a masterpiece.

Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 30, 2006

Pros: Pink's Debut and Syd Barrett's baby.....

    Cons: N/A

The Floyd's first album...released in that summer of love of '67...definatley a bond-fide pyschedelic classic and interesting to note the only Floyd album where founder Syd Barrett is present and is on every song. Much different than the bloa...ted huge FM radio days of latter Floyd, this album is in a class all its own. "Astronomy Domine" kicks it off with some bizarre ramblings into a megaphone naming off names of stars and what not in the galaxy...very effective. The song is sung real low key and the mid section stop and start back with guitar feedback is totally off the wall. A classic of floyds early work and done many times in concert..up to the present day. "Lucifer Sam" seems to be about a cat...and I know Syd was very found of cats, pretty cool song, but not a big standout. "Matilda Mother" is a song about seems to be a mother reading her child a fairytale book with stories of Kings and old folk tales, very hazy sounding and childlike but trippy as hell. Sung I believe by Rick Wright. "Flaming" is pretty wild with....hard to explain really, just something you would hear while taking a trip on something:-) Very poppy and psychedelic. "Pow-R-Toc-H" is a very interesting instrumental freak out type song with shouts and yells by the band mixed in with organ flourishes and snare drums. "Take up Thy Stethoscope and Walk" is sung by Roger Waters and is really a throwaway here...but pretty cool song nontheless...Waters still had a long way to go in the writing department. "Interstellar Overdrive" is a 10 min all out freak out pyschedelic jam pretty much and is really cool to listen to. I hear the guitar bit in it by Syd was a copy of the old song "Friday on my Mind" but done the way Syd heard it...more demented. Very bizarre bits in it and the end of the song is mixed back and forth twirling into the left and right speakers back and forth making it more bizarre. The Beatles were recording "Sgt Pepper" the very same time in the same building and alot has been said how both bands kinda inspired each other with certain studio tricks and what not like that mentioned above. "The Gnome" is another short piece of work like "Flaming" and is really decent...Syd's heavy British accent really sticks out in it...all of them mainly. "Chapter 24" is one of the best Syd songs here and totally cool and sweet to hear...a personal favorite. "Scarecrow" is really cool but more of an average song...the closer "Bike" is really bizarre and really funny with verses like "I know a mouse and he hasnt got a house I dont know why I call him gerald, he getting rather old but hes a good mouse"...the vocals are double tracked and wave in and out with each other to make it sound really off the wall...ends with clocks going off like crazy and birds flying away. Summing it up...Awesome Floyd cd and one of the most interesting, a must have...Syd shines here, but is quickly gone afterwards into the woodwork. RR Read more Less

    Psychedelia is born!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 8, 2003

Syd Barrett's best album. Pretty much different with what was to come for the Floyd in the '70s, but still is a masterpiece of psychedelia.Syd was truly a great and original artist, it's such a pity, he didn't continue (on the present) with his solo ...career. Still there goes a recomendation for people who like this album... buy Syd's The Madcap Laughs, a really good album. Read more Less

    Kinda silly

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 26, 2002

I think pink Floyd is the Greatest classic rock group in existence. But now I know that Syd Barret is a crazy, silly fellow. It's a great album though, the songs are fun to lsten to and well written. I'd recommend it to the abstract thinker, otherwis...e it wouldn't be appreciated. Read more Less

    Syd Barretts opus

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 14, 2002

This is one of the best FLOYD albums. Next to Meddle, Dark Side, The Wall, this album is just as good, and its very underated.Without Syd Barrett, there would be no PINK FLOYD. I like how Syd wrote almost the whole album. He's the most creative guit...arist and song writers I've heard!!! Read more Less

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 1, 2001

This Album is like no other before or since! Syd and the lads take listeners on a sonic/mystical adventure! It's like listening to the Chronicles of Narnia or Brothers Grimm stories! All people who own 'The Darkside of the Moon' or 'The Wall' shou...ld have a copy of 'Piper...' and listen to the Man that started it all! Read more Less
