    Definitive Chantays

Pros: Definitive of the genre: Maybe

    Cons: One trick pony

Along with Dick Dale, these guys defined a genre. THis is just an OK discc here. Too many of the songs start out like Pipeline. Missing here is "Beyond" which is featured on the OOP Legends of Guitar: Surf. If you are looking for a Chantays... disc this is great. The Surfaris also had a disc from this label. Not really a must have but pretty good. If you are a hardcore surf enthusiast, then you must own this disc. If not look for a best of from Rhino (Rock Instrumental Classics: Surf) Or bu it and make your own compilation. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Pipeline

  • All Music Guide

A CD reissue of their 1963 debut album, with the addition of "Pipeline"'s B-side and both sides of the non-LP flop follow-up single. Mostly it's lesser variations of the "Pipeline" formula, including one instrumental penned by Tony Asher, Brian Wilson's writing partner for much of the Pet Sounds album. It doesn't include the single "Beyond," which can be found on the surf volume of Rhino/Guitar Player's Legends of Guitar series.

Biography

The Chantays

In 1963, this teenage group from Santa Ana, CA, had one of the biggest and best instrumental surf hits, "Pipeline." Competent players who went heavy on the rumbling bass, ghostly reverb, and electric keyboards, they were very much a one-shot act; their repertoire was crowded with rock roll covers and "Pipeline" sound-alikes, and none of their follow-up singles charted.... Read more
