Pros: Setup, TiVo integration & DVD drive quality

Most of my audio components are Sony ES and I was really waiting for Sony to come up with a TiVo/DVDR or TiVo/DirectTV/DVR. The Sony DVR is nice but no TiVo means another box. I couldn't wait any longer so I bought the Pioneer.
The Pioneer DVR-810Hs is an awesome unit. Setup is simple (I suspect it's the same for all TiVos) and the DVD picture quality is better than my old Sony progressive scan. Have not called support so no rating there yet. It has a USB port so if you connect a wireless adapter, and have a wireless network, you can get the TiVo updates over the net and ditch the phone connection. I heard the drive can even be spanned/mapped from your network PC!
The only negative thing about the unit is the constant fan noise from a big 3" box fan tacked on to the back of the unit. Since there's no OFF button for a TiVo, the fan runs constantly. But hey, it's a computer!
I did go for an additional 4 year warranty so I'll be doing the $299 "life of the unit" TiVo option. The unit comes with TiVo basic and if you're happy with VCR style recording, it may be enough. Buy one now! You won't be sorry!Was this review helpful? Yes - NoPioneer DVR-810h-S
