Pro Reviews: Pink Lady
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Brandi Shearer's got a nice smoky, sultry sort of voice. Not the Eartha Kittstyle of sultry that modern lounge singers can't seem to avoid, but a more realistic, earthy form. Unfortunately for her voice, Shearer's choice of songs does little to highlight her abilities. A handful of songs bring out a sort of Norah Jones quality (which is reasonable given that half the band has spent time behind Jones), but the bulk of the items fall into the vein of a country singersongwriter sound that leaves Shearer sounding like some sort of modern Patsy Cline imposter. Worse yet, a few of the tracks chosen here make use of a pedal steel, which while played well adds only a feel of artificial nostalgia and puts Shearer into a pigeonhole reminiscent of Elvis' old Hawaiian songs. Shearer absolutely has some talent to show off in her vocals, but they may be better spent in front of a modern band that lets her stretch out rather than wasting away in front of simple lullabies and country ballads. - Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide |
