    Keep the Bonus CD

By The Abominable  Apr 14, 2003 | 1 out of 2 found this Pig Lib review helpful

and sell the rest because it is rubbage. Then again I am not into the Malkmus that is ranting and mindless (catering to the type of audience that doesn't really enjoy music but think to themselves "boy is it cool to be a fan of an "indie/underground.../non-popular" band) I did enjoy Terror Twilight and his debut solo album, so maybe that will give you insight of where I am coming from. Good for the unordained...

    By wojo  Mar 22, 2003

If you saw good reviews and are tempted to buy it go for it. If you are a diehard Pavement Fan (S+E through WZ) this probably won't do it. Compares with the Spiral's PSOI project. Good but just doesn't go as far as some of their other work. (I act...ually think the bonus CD is awesome, and made it totally worth the money; make sure you get one with it) Read more Less

Response to acotzen and a real review!

    By A  Mar 21, 2003

Dear acotzen,You are correct in saying that my writing is terrible. After having re-read what I considered at the time to be a masterpiece of "pretentious dithering," I agree that it is indeed simply pretentious dithering (without quotes). It would... be much more appropriate to repeat all the stock phrases in the rock critic's handbag: the record is "uninspired," "the tempos stumble and sound forced," and Pig Lib marks the "end of an era." Then we would all know that we are "on the same page." (Besides, I've always thought of myself as the Christian Rock version of Maximum Jihad, Jello Biafra's proposed Islamic fundamentalist version of a hardcore thrash band.)So how's about a real review without the dithering?"Downloading "Oyster" from the Matador website before the disc came out, I felt giddy, like I did listening to music when I was 13. I still feel that way every time I listen to that and other SM/Pavement songs. "Water and a Seat" really does sound like Jerry Garcia/GD (before the guitars get dirty and the tempo beautifully stumbles over the singer's broken, croaking, Jane-Birken-like goofiness). Vanessa from Queens. Witch Mountain Bridge, 1% of One, and Craw Song are all great, weird, ridicuouls, damaged, and strangely epic. OK, my writing is terrible; I grant you that. But this record makes me inexplicably happy. There was no 'era' to end."Writing about music is like dancing about architecture. -- Laurie Anderson Read more Less

    Stephen Malkmus

    By __A_YAHOO_USER__  Mar 20, 2003

Stephen Malkmus is one of the finest guitarists/songwriters of this generation. While his last outing was disapointing, this album returns to the wierd song structures, pop sensibilities, and broken but brilliant guitar playing that made Malkmus famo...us. THe extra CD is truly a bonus. Pavement is over, and I don't think that Malkmus or the Jicks can match the greatness of that band, but this proves that he still has it,and most likely always will. The marsh hawk will bite off your behind

    By David  Mar 19, 2003

OK, I've only heard the record 1.5 times. But here is my opinion: "Malkmus is a wary tattoo artist with black rose petals underneath his fingernails. Do not feed the oyster and 1% of 1 are as good or better as anything pavement or jicks ever did do.... A strange mix of Jerry Garcia NOT on drugs (I am not kidding) and sonic youth on bad LSD (and John Ashberry on Splenda). That reviewer who said "Brighten the Corners mediocrity" reveals his hatred for false penguins and authentic mannequins. I give it 4 stars because three or fewer seems lonely, overcast, dull. (YAHOO: your suggestions for writing good reviews are dehumanizing and quite helpful for pidgin midgets.) If you think slanted and enchanted is so great why not crawl back into the womb and suckle on the stars you saved for the return of the 90s." A pretty good record with some truly beautiful moments that make it all worth it. Read more Less

Pig Lib - Grab that Pig and Make Bacon

    By Bob  Mar 17, 2003

Jesus! This is terrible! Guy can't sing, terrible back up musicians - it may not be possible but this mess is far worse than his solo album over a year ago. Malkmus had a strange, Ray Davies kind of synergy with the other members of Pavement - but... is so bizarre and downright untalented on his own that you literally cringe after this CD fires up. What happened to the rest of Pavement! Please guys, go find Malkmus and get us out of this tail spin into hell...By the way, I consider Terror Twilight one of the five greatest albums in rock...just my opinion. Read more Less

    Pig Lib

Same battle as his last album: annoying lyrics and cheesy song production vs. beautiful music and lyrical gems. Who wins? I don't know. At least it's interesting, but I liked his last album better.

    A disappointment

    By U.L. Washington  Mar 12, 2003

Don't believe it when someone says the Jicks are a band. It's just Malkmus solo, which was fine the first time around with Phantasies, Troubbble, etc.But a lot of what's here sounds like Brighten the Corners-era mediocrity (Esp. Do not Feed the Oyste...r). It's still worth a fan's while.Maybe it'll grow on me. Ihope so. Read more Less
