Pro Reviews: Pieces of Blue and the Blues

  • All Music Guide

Taken from the same "Live at the Village Vanguard" gig that resulted in Generation, Kenny Burrell is teamed up with two younger guitarists (Rodney Jones and Bobby Broom), both of whom have styles and sounds very similar to the older player; it is fortunate that the liners tell who is playing what. Bassist Dave Jackson and drummer Kenny Washington are fine in support of the three guitarists on a variety of blues and bop standards including "Raincheck," "Jeannine" and "'Round Midnight." Nothing all that unexpected or surprising occurs but this is a fine straightahead set.
