Cons: A pity that the CD didn't include the whole play, only all the musical parts
This is the definitive recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's masterpiece musical, 'The Phantom of the Opera'. Everything about is superb, I bought it over a month ago...after I bought the highlights and have never stopped listening to it since.
Having watched the 2004 film with Gerald Butler, I had some initial misgivings about the original soundtrack.
And wow, was I most pleasantly mistaken.
Most would find Michael Crawford's interpretation of this dark character rather bizarre. His unconventional, rather high-pitched vocals, compared to Gerald Butler's low ones, aren't what we normally relate to the role of the Phantom. When one thinks of the Phantom of the Opera, we immediately think of this arch-typical, die-hard villain with no sense of humanity, but despite all this, Crawford, the first and original Phantom, approaches with an unbelievable sense of pathos and emotion. His vocals are mesmerising, they are smooth and tender and it's very hard for us as the listeners to tune into this man's raging emotions as he sings his heart out to the only love of his life, Christine.
Crawford is exceptionally versatile in the role, going from tender and wonderfully seductive in the 'Music of the Night': 'Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind...' to unbelievably terrifying and verging on the insane: 'You will curse the day you did not do...'
His evil, maniacal laugh is also unmmatched...quite an acheivement for an actor who play the bumbling, childish Frank Spencer on the popular '70's comedy: 'Some Mother's Do 'Ave 'Em' Crawford fans, as with I, will be delighted to see the marvellous transformation this great actor/singer has achieved. (I, for one, am still reeling at the fact that Frank Spencer and the Phantom are played by the same man.)
Sarah Brightman is the only Christine, her bell-like vocals are smooth and sublime, many other Christines I have heard have so far fallen short of the mark.
The late Steve Barton is marvellous as the Phantom's rival, Raoul. His smooth, baritone voice is comforting and pleasant to listen to. All three voices combined in the trios on the disc are wonderful, most notably: 'Wandering Child...' and 'Down Once More.'
This is best recording ever made and is bound to offer hours of relaxation and enjoyment. Highly reccomended. ...

Pro Reviews: Phantom of the Opera [Original Cast] (Remastered)
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews This is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most highly acclaimed productions. The two-disc set comes with a booklet that has not only the lyrics, but also the dialog and stage directions. Sarah Brightman appears as Christine Daae (the heroine) and Michael Crawford as the Phantom. It's also available in a one-disc "highlights" version. - Tavia Hobart, All Music Guide |
