This album isn't just the best beach boys album, but one of the greatest rock albums of all time. I also think that this is the best produced album to date.

As has happened with Sgt Pepper critics have hailed and hyped this record into the stratosphere. Guess what listeners? It's not the even best Beach Boys album and it's certainly not the "best album ever made" as critics often say. In this respect it's more like Sgt Pepper than ever - that record itself suffering from years of over-hype. Sure, there is beautiful music here, yet it lacks the spontanaiety of other releases and hosts one song I wish they'd never recorded, "Sloop John B." BUT, don't be put off, it's still great, if a little inconsistent and contrived. "Caroline No" and the instrumental title song rank as two of B.Wilson's best ever compositions and there are gorgeous melodies throughout. Just don't expect the best record you've ever heard if you are coming to it for the first time, and, if it's your first Beach Boys purchase, don't be put off, Wild Honey, Smiley Smile, Friends and Surf's Up all do the business as well, if not better, than this.
