my people...hold on is a great album
, August 4, 2006Pros: Loved every song on the album. My favorite is "Let me run into your lonely heart" this song is very funky!
Cons: The only song I didn't like was "Day by day" Eddie sounds very bland uncomfortable singing it.
"My people...hold on" has to be the best album ever by Eddie Kendricks. It's a social statement to all black music. I loved every song on this album. "I'm on the sideline" is a very catchy track as well as the album best "Girl you need a change of mind" the full 7:30min verision. (I'd like to hear the unedited version everyone says is so great) "Let me run into your lonely heart" is a great track with funky beats and great vocals. To me it didn't sound uncoordinated. My only complaint is the song "Day by day" a very bland song. It sounds too much like funeral song. "If you let me" is the version of Jimmy Ruffin's failed song (Eddie sounds way better than Jimmy sorry not hating on Jimmy Ruffin he's a good singer but Eddie made that song his own)the song "My people...hold on" is the most unique song I've ever heard on the album. Has African drums and chants of "HOLD ON!" which is really unique to the R&B world. Eddie has made a breakthrough album in his time. Some of the best albums are ignored. This truely is a classic worth hearing on the Ultimate collection that contains four of EJK's albums on a two disc collection. ...

| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Albums like this are why best-of and greatest-hits compilations aren't end-alls. One can find lots of good material that for a multitude of reasons never got released as singles, or if it did, went unnoticed as the flips of A-sides. The title track "My People Hold On" is one of Motown's most adventurous recordings with Eddie Kendricks; everything from African drums, a strong social message, and unorthodox backing chants makes the track a winner. Kendricks switches from his natural tenor to falsetto as easily as shifting gears in a Corvette, and no, you won't find it on The Ultimate Collection. Club favorite "Girl You Need a Change of Mind" features some wicked rhythms and urgent singing by Kendricks, while "If You Let Me" remains one of Eddie's best vocals; originally recorded by Jimmy Ruffin, Kendricks makes it his and his alone. The seductive slowies "Date With the Rain," "Day by Day," and "Just Memories" are aided by Eddie's sweet, innocent falsetto. - Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide |

The entire album is filled with back to back dance jams, messages of peace and harmony, and tight, heartfelt ballads. I cannot talk about this album unless I mention my all time favorite Eddie K. song: "Girl You Need a Change of Mind"...a prelude of what was to come the following year when Eddie found himself with a Number One, million-selling single with "Keep On Truckin'". It was because of "Girl You Need a Change of Mind" that "Truckin'"
PEOPLE...HOLD ON is an absolute must have. If you can get your hands on it, snatch it up right away! Almost every song is a winner. The one weak spot on the album: "Let Me Run Into Your Lonely Heart", which sounds somewhat uncoordinated and even a bit erratic. But overall, Eddie Kendricks' PEOPLE...HOLD ON will definitely have you holding on...and not wanting to let go.
