The face of the OptioS is smaller than the size of an average credit or business card and just over 3/4 inch thick, while the camera overall is slightly smaller than the size of a deck of playing cards. The OptioS fits neatly into an empty tin of Altoids. But it is still a high-quality 3.2 effective megapixel, 3X (6X combined) zoom digital camera with a sleek design and a tough aluminum alloy case.

Despite the size, OptioS is packed with features found only on larger, higher-priced digital cameras: a movie mode with sound playback, a voice recording mode for attaching 30-second memos to selected images, a well-placed 1.6-inch LCD monitor, approximately 11MB of built-in memory and a powerful rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The camera delivers a big punch with its variety of shooting modes, including super macro, which captures images from just under 2.4 inches away, and infinity-landscape, which is great for shooting panoramic landscapes.

    Optio S travel cam

By Paul W  Apr 7, 2003 | 16 out of 21 found this Pentax Optio S review helpful

Great feature-packed tiny camera for a traveller like me. Lithium battery superior to NiMH bulky rechargables in my 3.2 MP OLY. But pics very comparable. Optio menus do require some time with the owners manual. And why dont these expensive cameras co...me with a case; the pretty brushed aluminum face scratches easily. Get the SD memory card, worth the extra money. Read more Less

It fits in to an ALTOIDS TIN

By Steven N  Aug 6, 2003 | 7 out of 7 found this Pentax Optio S review helpful

3x optical zoom, 3.2mp, and compact. What else could you ask for? Picture quality is great. The flash is much brighter than I expected. When I got the camera, I went backpacking for 4 days. I was afraid the battery might not last so I would turn the ...lcd screen off and use the viewfinder as much as possible. In the coarce of the vacation, I took 70 HQ pictures and 4 30sec movies. I used the viewfinder a little more than I wanted and I still got to use the camera the entire trip. I would have to give the battery life A+. My friends love the lil camera. It is a great ice breaker in bars. You pull out an Altoids tin and ask them if they want a mint and then show them the camera. It really does work. You should see some of the pictures that we have gotten with this lil babe magnet. Read more Less

    Pentax Optio S

An adorably small camera with features adequate for large point-and-shoot models.Weighing only 4.1 ounces, the Optio S is the lightest and smallest digital camera we've tested to date. It's so small, in fact, that it fits Read more

    Pentax Optio S Review

The Optio S is a camera which has immediate 'consumer appeal'. By this I'm talking about its design, size and weight. The ultra-slim lightweight aluminium body and flat front and rear mean the Optio S truly is a carry anywhere camera that is so light you'll hardly notice you're carrying it. Operationally the Optio S is perfect for its job, startup is quick, as is auto focus and the camera feels responsive almost all the time. The only niggle here was the lack of buffering which means you must wait for the current image to be saved before taking the next. The 'S' however wasn't without a few problems, we found the lens to be soft, especially in the corners and at the bottom of the frame. The lens also had some mild chromatic aberrations and vignetting. All told however the Optio S is a great responsive, carry anywhere camera with good image quality at a good price point. Read more
