    Pentax K100d

Pros: Uses SD card, 4 AA batteries, most Pentax K lenses work with it, shake reduction,

Cons: With so many features it can be intimidating at first

This is one good camera with all the right ingredients, at a good price for someones first digital SLR. Pentax's choice of a SD card is good as these are available cheap and with good capacity. The thought that some camera manufacturers are movin...g to use a special batteries is scary, the k100d uses very available AA batteries. The shake reduction works well as does the general camera layout, and isn't it nice that most older Pentax lenses work with it. I moved up to the Pentax K100d from a 3 mp point and shoot digital camera that I thought gave good service. After looking at the first 40 photos I took with the new camera I was amazed at the quality and realized what I had been missing with the old camera, and that was before I read the instruction book. Great camera, right features, right price for entry level DSLR. It will probably become an icon in the camera world. Happy photos amigos! Read more Less

    Best of the bunch

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 21, 2007 | 12 out of 12 found this Pentax K100D review helpful

Pros: AA batteries, Shake reduction, diopter range, 11 pt AF.

    Cons: None

You have to excuse the many reviewers that can't resist using the words "entry level". I think it irks them that Pentax has pulled off something remarkable here. It leaves the Canon Rebel and the Nikon D40 in the dust (uses the same CCD... as the D40), and speaking of dust, the shake reduction system aids in removing dust periodically. A pro feature. The K100D has a rather unique, undocumented feature: fantastic infra red sensitivity not seen in many digital cameras these days. A deal sealer for me, the camera uses AA batteries. This sets it alone, as the only camera that can use a battery available at any convenience store in a pinch. Rechargeable NMH batteries provide up to 400 shots. Plenty, and spares are easy to carry. I bought a Transcend 150x 4 Gig SD card and will store over 800 RAW pics or about 1500 high quality 6 MP images. The K100D allows you to use older Pentax lenses and still take advantage of the shake reduction technology. Kudos for allowing us to use great lenses from years gone by. The Nikon D40 requires you to commit to new lenses. A ridiculous notion, especially for overpriced glass. I had previously used Nikon 35mm before P&S. Pentax invented the SLR, and I think this model sets it apart from other DSLR's. A pro camera that pros will sneak into their bags. Read more Less

    Great camera for budding photographers

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 15, 2007 | 7 out of 7 found this Pentax K100D review helpful

Pros: Takes AA batteries, Price, Easy to use, shake reduction

Cons: slow write speeds for longer exposures, no aperture bracketing, light meter reading not on top display.

This was my first digital SLR after years of using a 35mm Canon EOS rebel my father passed on to me. I wanted to pick up a Canon digital rebel at first, but I could not afford the steep price. I compromised by purchasing the K100D and expected a barg...ain basement camera. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the value of this camera. Although I may be a pretty sub-standard photographer, this camer has been producing beatiful images for me. I took it on a recent heilcopter survey of earthquake damage on the Big Island and the shake reduction feature proved to be priceless. I was able to shoot at shutter speeds and f-stops that were at least 2 lower than I normally shoot. There are only three things that sort of bother me about this camera so far. First, at longer exposures the camera takes a while to write to the memory card. it is a noticeable lag of at least several seconds. Second, the body is a bit on the heavy side. of course, this may be due to its stury frame and shake reduction mechanism. Finally, there is no light meter reading on the top display, Only in the view finder. Other than those things I love this camera. I mean hey, we all have our flaws. Read more Less

    Amazing camera!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 26, 2007 | 5 out of 5 found this Pentax K100D review helpful

Pros: Quality, price, ease of use, everything!

Cons: I'm too much of a novice to understand every function yet!

I was doing plenty of reasearch into other dslr cameras and this one in particular in the last year. With the amount of money I was able to spend, and the amount of time I put into researching, this camera seemed like quite the catch. I have only had... it for a short time, but I love it and take it with me everywhere. I know a little about photography, but have only dealt with point-and-shoots and film cameras until now, and I am super impressed! This camera is truly the best buy I have ever been involved in, and look forward to expanding on it and learning more about it so that I can take the best quality pictures imaginable. I am sooooo impressed with how this camera feels in my hand, as opposed to the others I tried holding and didnt feel comfortable with or didnt like the cheapness or feel of the others. It's sturdy and the weight is perfect to hold for long periods of time, the battery life so far has been absolutley terrific, and all I have is AAs and a recharger. I love how convenient every feature is, and am excited to learn more about it! This camera is really a good buy for the first time user, and I assume that I wont need anything else for QUITE some time. The picture quality is terrific as well, and with the 18-55 lens I have, I am taking great photos. I suggest this as a terrific buy! Read more Less

    Love my Pentax!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 21, 2007 | 5 out of 5 found this Pentax K100D review helpful

Pros: Solid feel, shake reduction, ease of use, clear viewfinder, beautiful picture quality....I could go on and on!

Cons: Have Not found any yet!

As an exploring new photographer, I chose the K100 for the options and great reviews, the price was a complete bonus. My dad has always used Pentax and actually has a 35mm from the 70's that I still enjoy. I was utterly thrilled to find some grea...t used lenses on E-bay for cheap since many of the older Pentax lenses will fit. I love the way the Camera feels in your hands, very balanced and solid without being heavy. I have found it efficient with well thought out control placement. The view finder is magnificent, I actually enjoy viewing the world through it! I am learning so much everyday about photography and what my K100 can do, I have not been let down yet! I highly recommend this camera for anyone who enjoys photography and want to move from point and shoot to a more serious DSLR! Read more Less

    Great Camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 3, 2007 | 2 out of 3 found this Pentax K100D review helpful

Pros: Lots. 400+ shots with battery charge, good quality, small, feels good, fast, spot meter, Pentax K bajonet lens compatibility, etc

Cons: Only 3 shot buffer in RAW mode

The camera has 6MP - in today's market that is not that much, but for the ambitious amateur it is plenty. The lenses - even the kit lens - are good quality. You can get lots of lenses for the K100D based on the decades old K-bajonet. and the user... community provides good support. The built in anti-shake function is something you have to pay extra on *every* lens in Nikon/Canon land. Read more Less

    Excellent camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 16, 2007 | 1 out of 2 found this Pentax K100D review helpful

Pros: AA batteries, SD media, shake reduction, lots of features, low price

Cons: No dust management system, cryptic menu abbreviations

This is my first SLR, after using a point-and-shoot for years. Bought it just before a 2-week vacation in Thailand. My wife used our old Sony 5.1MP camera, and we took quite a few pictures of similar composition. Although both took good pictures, I h...ave to say that the Pentax clearly stood out as better quality. I played around with the aperture and shutter settings to obtain some good effects, but as a novice I mostly used the scene and auto scene modes. AA batteries are a big plus for me; I can use the same ones (and the same charger!) for both cameras, as well as other gadgets I carry when traveling. The batteries lasted for several hundred (mostly non-flash) shots between recharges. The shake reduction really works; I took several shots from the back of bouncing buses and tuk-tuks that came out crystal clear. The only missing feature is the dust management system which is becoming more common on consumer-level DSLRs. But for the price, I don't think you can beat this camera. Read more Less
