Pros: Another solid solo effort from the talented one in Wham!
Cons: Missing one key track from the import edition.
The title of George Michael's new solo album obviously refers to the patience with which we've waited for this CD, his first of original material since 1996's "Older." It's not as consistent as that record, but it does feature some of Michael's most personal and inspired work. There are some great tunes, a few good ones, and a couple boring ones, resulting in an overall worthwhile effort. The kickoff single, "Amazing," is an unpretentious, guitar flavored pop song that deserved its Top Ten status in Britain. "Flawless (Go to the City)" is a flamboyant, 6-minute disco stomper that has the word "hit" all over it, and "American Angel" is a touching love song about his Texas boyfriend. Every George Michael CD has at least one tearjerker of a ballad, and on this CD, that song is definitely "My Mother Had a Brother," which addresses the suicide of his uncle. If this track doesn't make you misty in the eyes, you better make sure you still have a pulse. But "Patience" gets a bit weighed down by only a couple filler tracks. More interesting, is that the American version doesn't have the anti-war "Shoot the Dog," a scathing diatribe against George Bush and Tony Blair. I guess that Sony reasoned that it would hurt George's American sales by including such a politically charged song in a time when 1) Iraq is currently in a state of turmoil and 2) during an election year. Still, this CD deserved to be as much a hit on these shores as the UK, where it went to Number One. It's not perfect, but make no mistake: this "Patience" is a virtue.
Pros: Soulful, insightful, observation of love and longing
Cons: Not the most commercial work
"Patience" is an album of smooth, mellow grooves over laid with deep lyrics of loving and longing("Mother had a Brother," and "American Angel"). "Patience" is, also an album of highly infectous beats ("Amazing," "Freek," and "Flawless"). George Michael's voice is a pure joy to experience on this album. Buy! Enjoy! This is one the best albums of his career.
Pros: The Album
Cons: Not enough songs
Its been 10 years of suffering through plastic artists like Brittany and all these carbon copy boybands, plus the over produced hip hop scene. Times have changed where the talent is 10 percent and the record company is 90 percent. True talent will stand the test of time not the record business hype. There are many stars assembled on that great assembly line in Hollywood or whereever but true talent is born and then become stars, just like George Micheal. This new album catches where he is now in his life, with songs about his new love and his first lover.
With a perfect mix of upbeat songs as well as sincere ones, this album surely has something for all George Micheal's fans, even the pop era ones. You can see this is rebirth of his writing style and outlook. Coming out of the dark of depression and confusion in his life, this is a warning! the next album is going to be a fully bloomed and evolved George Micheal. THIS ALBUM IS A MUST! BUY 2 ONE IN THE CAR ONE IN THE CD PLAYER AT HOME AND LETS TEACH THE RECORD COMPANIES THAT ITS TALENT WE WANT.
Pros: Not Many
Cons: Dreary Dreary
This man used to be a singer. What happened to the power and passion of Teacher and others. He just walks through these boring non descript songs one after another. I always gave him credit as one of the benchmark singers of his type. This is terrible. Simon Cowell would have a field day with this lackluster offering. Don't bother.
Pros: 12 Songs
Cons: 12 Songs
After having read several of the posted reviews, I have to admit that I was eager to purchase George Michael's "Patience". A fan of his music, style and perserverance over the past decade plus (I wasn't a fan of the pop star George Michael during the "Faith" days), I still consider "Listen Without Prejudice" one of the best and most honest albums of the past twenty years.
"Patience" has a few merits and even virtues as the lyrics are real and honest. I was disappointed, to say the least, with the musical choices he made on this album as many of the songs are nothing more than clubby dance songs with little to no "soul". Where is the song composition? Where is the influence? Why did he play it so incredibly safe on his, rumored to be, "last album"? It left me bored and ready to pop "Listen Without Prejudice" back into the cd player...
Unfortunately, IT is simply not there and I have a feeling that George Michael will once again make a comeback...this time hopefully with a little more guts and a lot less "dance music". Still a fan though George!
Pros: slick production
Cons: no hooks
I loved Wham, loved Faith, liked Listen W/O Prejudice, and like Older, But beginning with the two disc greatest hits album, George Micheal began his journey to irrelevance. How can you have an album like Faith, that has a jazz number among it's diverse songs, and then put out bland "Patience", where everything sounds the same? The first song has become a major crutch for George, and he repeats the trend here, dissapointing listeners with a somber intro. It's like he is constantly apologizing for his past, by getting things off on a serious note. If you want to make a party album, make a full party album. If you want to make a serious album, them learn to write more interesting songs, and make a fully serious album - something that means something. After that Blair/Bush video that I loved, I was hoping for something similar. Peter Gabriel did not dissapoint, he is still a great one. I was waiting for this album, and now I'm just glad I got it on sale, instead of paying full price. Remember who you were, George. Look at Prince, and what a decade long journey outside of what he did best cost him.
Pros: Great mix of different styles.
Cons: A little melancholic at times.
George is BACK!!! I've been watching the development of this album for months, and have to say that I am ecstatic with the results. There's something on this album to make just about everybody happy: pop tunes, club tunes, introspective ballads -- and it's all good. Sometimes the slower songs sort of run together and you forget you're even listening to a CD, but then it breaks into a faster track and it pulls you right back in. From what I understand, the American version of the album doesn't contain "Shoot the Dog". Too bad. It's a fun tune. I ordered the UK import version for just that reason. Buy it! Support George! Keep him releasing in the U.S.
Pros: Very well put together
Cons: None.
Like another reviewer, I too couldn't wait for this CD to arrive here in the USA. I purchased from England a month ago and never regretted it. George Michael has been a favorite of mine for years and this certainly only reinforces my feelings. He is a professional with music and lyrics and I will always be willing to listen to and buy his stuff.
Pros: great lyrics. amazing voice
Cons: not enough upbeat songs
George Michael made his fans wait 8 years for a new album. And it's a good one. Not his best - but it shows his growth as a songwriter and an artist.
If you thought the songs on "Older" were emotional, wait until you hear these songs! George seems to have removed all the barriers between his personal thoughts and emotions and is letting everything hang out. Similar to "Older", George is no longer confining himself to standard lyrical and rhythmic pop standards. This means that the beauty of the songs tend to reveal themselves after repeated listens, and not on the first hearing. But the payoff is worth the patience.
I'll go over the songs (and some of my favorite lyrics):
1. Patience - "Look into the eyes of any patient man...there's a piece of God staring back at you."
2. Amazing - this should be a hit! It's got a very infectious groove with that wonderful 80's handclap.
3. John & Elvis Are Dead - I read this lyric before I heard the song and I just said "Wow." I have no idea if this is a true story but it's pretty incredible. Definitely not a standard pop song. "If Jesus Christ is going to save us from ourselves, how come peace, love and Elvis are dead?"
4. Cars & Trains - a good song about being stuck in a cycle of destructive behavior.
5. Round Here - autobiographical song that even name drops Andrew Ridgeley! A tribute to his upbringing. This song really soars when the chorus kicks in. "Andy says it's time to show them all round here"
6. My Mother Had A Brother - another amazing song about George's uncle who committed suicide at about the same time George was born. Very personal song. This song really builds lyrically and musically. "But mama will you tell him from your boy the times have changed."
7. Flawless (Go To the City) - dancefloor anthem! This is about 8 minutes of dancing pleasure similar to Pet Shop Boys "New York City Boy"
8. American Angel - love song to George's significant other. Pretty standard song.
9. Precious Box - this song confuses me a bit. I'm not sure what it's about. I think it might be about George's TV. Lol "Precious keeps me company. Keeps me from being alone"
10. Please Send Me Someone (Anselmo's Song) - good latin-flavored beat. The song itself doesn't come off as bleak as the lyric. It's about finally being ready to move on after the loss of a loved one.
11. Freeek! '04 - this song has about 25 songwriters because it contains a number of samples. Despite all those songwriters, the song is only OK. It's the most obviously socially critical song on the album but it's not as good as previous efforts such as "Mother's Pride."
12. Through - this is a weeper. For most of the album, George sings in a very vocally controlled and restrained fashion. Finally, he lets loose on this song! It gives me chills. I hope he's not really through. "I've enough of these chains. I know they're of my making."
Pros: brilliant overall album i'm talkin' grammy
Cons: weird little boys on cover art
brilliant cd. reminds me of listen without prejudice volume one. i have been eagerly awaiting this cd for years. george is simply one of the most refined, brilliant song writers and perfomers of our era. you will not be disappointed. buy this cd today! comments to: gregoryder@sbcglobal.net
Pros: Original lyrics, smooth vocals with a mix of funky & upbeat with somber and reflective tunes
Cons: the Justin Timberlake's of today's pop music will not be able to hold a candle to this man
As George Michael fans may have heard, Micheal bought the same piano that John Lennon used for "Imagine". That show's Michael's pure love for genuine artistic value in music, and this CD is no different. From the pensive tracks of "Patience" or "Through" to the funky, sex-upped tracks of "Freeek '04" or "Shoot The Dog", to the smooth mid-tempo gems "American Angel" and "Anselmo's Song", there is something for every genuine music fan.
Pros: A lot of upbeat songs, beautiful lyrics and voice
Cons: Not a lot of his great lyrical ballads
I couldn't wait for this CD to be released in the states, so I bought it as an import off a website. George Michael will always be under rated, especially since his bathroom incident. The CD patience displays what a talented pop artist is all about. Michael is definately back, but the real question is did he ever really go away? I thought he wouldn't be able to top his Older CD as far as lyrics and music composition; Patience is a great competitor.
Pros: different sound, sexy, funky,
Cons: dont like the profanity, didnt like the break in first song,
I like this CD a lot. George Michael has a great voice and sings very well on this CD. I think it is a good mix of slow and upbeat songs. My favorite ones are 2,10,4,5, I did like all the songs but I didnt like the song before the last one but it might grow on me later. I dont think Americans will like this Cd so much because it has a dance feel. One of the best CDs that i have bought and have enjoyed it all in all. The music is good and good production. Small details that I didnt like, well, I didnt like the profanity in two of the songs, and 2 songs sound the same but all in all I would recommend this CD.
Pros: Music, lyrics.
Cons: none
This is his best yet, I've been wearing this CD out, just as much as his eairler release Listen Without Prejudice(sp)
Every George Michael fan, should have this.
