    Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1971)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 10, 2006

Pros: Some of the Sabs most noteable work....

    Cons: Nothing really....

The Sab's 2nd release...was to be titled "Warpigs" but because of the Vietnam war going on, the record company refused and was titled "Paranoid" instead. In any case, a hell of a Sabbath album and probaly the most celebrated of their career. Containing 3 of their biggest hits "Paranoid" "Iron Man" and "Warpigs"...its a metal classic.

"Warpigs" kicks it right off...there is a subtitle however titled "Lukes Wall" which I believe is the last part of the song, the instrumentaling that closes it off..awesome top notch lyrics with Ozzy's singing...makes this a decent track and a long one at that clocking in at like 8 minutes, the speeding up at the end was always my favorite. The next one up....the title track "Paranoid" I hear was actually knocked off really fast as a short 3 minute song for time constraints of the record...needing something short and sweet, but they came up with it...and its one of the most known Sab songs in their history. (Of note: Type O Negative does a cover of this that is like 7 minutes long and is the best cover I've heard of it ever.) "Planet Caravan" is nothing like i've ever heard of Sabbath before or since...very slow and purtruding, Pantera covered it though, it's a pretty decent track. "Iron Man" is up next with Ozzy's robotic sounding vocal trick with "I-i-i-i- A-m-m-m- I-r-o-n M-a-n" and Bill Ward's foot pedal beating irritatingly away...into one of the most known guitar riffs this side of 'Smoke on the water'. Excellent song nonetheless.

"Electric Funeral" is really wild with wahh wahh sounding slow hypnotic Iommi riffs and singing by Ozzy...decent track and the 'Lectric Funeral! in the middle section with the deeper voice makes it work. The complex "Hand of Doom" is next with Geezer Butlers thudding bass line and lyrics which sound to be about a drug addict shooting up...then the excellent soloing by Iommi when the songs speeds up into overdrive. "Rat Salad" is essentially a drum solo song for Bill Ward along the lines of Zep's Moby Dick and is cool...the closer "Faries wear Boots" is another more well known song and works really good with another subtitle "Jack the Stripper" but not one of my favorites.

Summing it up...Sab's best work and worth owning for any metal or Ozzy fan....get it, nuff said:-) RR

    Pros: great album

    Cons: none

This album has never been toped. The feel, sound, clean production outstanding musicianship Ozzy`s voice. As a whole this album is perfection. Its like watching an old fashon horror movie through music. This type of music is not something you want to listen to all the time but there is none better of its kind.

The Greatest Metal Album of All Time

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 27, 2005

    Pros: Great Riffs, Great Album

    Cons: None

While 35 years have passed since its original release in 1970, Black Sabbath's Paranoid album retains its position as the greatest metal album of all time, as well as one of the most influential in rock history. Tony Iommi's unique guitar style, the excellent basslines of Geezer Butler, the thundering drumlines of Bill Ward, and the singing of Ozzy Osbourne combine to form a masterwork that is as yet unmatched. Several of the greatest metal tracks ever written, including Iron Man, War Pigs, and Paranoid, are bound together in Black Sabbath's best work, from a time before metal was about screaming over a thundering guitar. Well-deserving of the highest ratings possible.

    Sabbath's second masterpiece

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 12, 2004

    Pros: Great riffs!!

Cons: nothing that I could think of

Black Sabbath's "Paranoid", continues off where their previous masterpiece "Black Sabbath", left off. Tony's riffs just totally blow you away. "Iron Man", and "War Pigs", are probably the most heavy riffs created during their time. The band also explores new territories with "Planet Caravan", which sounds creepy as hell. I recommend this to any heavy metal fan. Paranoid will certainly please those who liked their first album.

Possibly the best idea for a first Sabbath record. But it get's dull after such a long time listening to it. I'm so sick of Iron Man and Paranoid. I never hear Fairies Wear Boots on the radio anymore.
It's a great album, but not just for War Pigs and the other monster hits. But it's central focus on heavy riffs and apocalyptic doom that made Sabbath a premiere metal band.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 29, 2002

Lyrics are satanic, but I see no problem with that. After all, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has its share of satanic scenes. So naturally, this makes it okay!! The Sabbath classics "Paranoid", "Iron Man", and "War Pigs", are surrounded by mostly considerably weaker tracks. But overall, this is undoubtfully a good album!

Can't think of anything new to say about Paranoid, the greatest (also arguably the first) heavy metal album of all time. After 32 years, this is still the most important heavy metal album ever. Paranoid, Iron Man, Electric Funeral, Planet Caravan, War Pigs/Luke's Wall,Hell all the songs kick ass! This is an absolute must for any true metal fan!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 21, 2001

This is the greatist (and arguably first) heavy metal album of all time. "Planet caravan" is increadable, dark fucking pychedelica. "War pigs" and "Iron man" are a metal heads dream and the title track just blows you away. long live Sabbath

IRON MAN!! Does anybody remember the Road Warriors using Iron Man as ring entrance music. They would have their opponent pinned before the music was over!! Their is many other great songs on the album like Electric Funeral and Hand of Doom besides the classics like Warpigs and Paranoid.

    wow...who cares

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 6, 2001

I understand to the fullest that everyone thinks of this album when the words "Black Sabbath" are mentioned. Well, not me. This album truly isn't that great compared to other Sabbath albums(Master Of Reality, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,& Sabotage). I'm one of those people who look for depth in music. Not just bland, repetitive vocals & instrumentation. You realize an album isn't that great when you know after 1 listen that you can play the songs. If you want a truly better listen, get the albums listed above or Volume 4.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 2, 2001

I don't like that album...songs are too square,
too psycotic, too...metal! I know, though, that this album is a classic, and that it is the ultimate metal album...I respect that. But
the songs here are really poor compared to the ones on Sabotage, seems to me.

Sabbath define the heavy metal sound

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 10, 2001

PARANOID saw Black Sabbath transforming the ragged, loose music of their debut album. The rhythm section courtesy of Butler and Ward became tighter, the riffs direct and cutting, the lyrics in many ways more mature and more real. By 1971's MASTER OF REALITY the transformation was complete - Sabbath were a true heavy metal band, but PARANOID saw this process duly coming alive. Lyrically the band were on fine form, forget the death and satanism shit that modern metal bands do to try and look controversial - Sabbath were tackling mental illness (PARANOID) and the horrors of war (WAR PIGS) at a time when popular music sought acid-drenched escapism. Black Sabbath lyrically were very, very real. Ozzy's wailing vocals were the perfect means of giving such doom-laden tales added punch. WAR PIGS, driven by Iommi's urgently dynamic riff-work and Bill Ward's frenzied drumming, is not your sentimental hippy anti-war song - rather it throws the realities of war right in your face and makes you confront the horrors of conflict like no rock song had ever done before. WAR PIGS can be said to predate the excellent CHILDREN OF THE GRAVE on MASTER OF REALITY. Musically the band play the sounds that the song titles suggest. Tony Iommi's guitar playing sounds venomous throughout - the razor edged riff work sounds so cutting on tracks like PARANOID and IRON MAN that it sounds like he's chewing them out of the strings with a toothpick. Other tracks like ELECTRIC FUNERAL and HAND OF DOOM are typically excellent Sabbath fare - FAIRIES WEAR BOOTS, in reference to the occult, is a particularly fine and musically diverse treasure, the sound of shimmering, distorted electric guitar effects creating a mood of eerie expectation before those huge chords come crashing in. This album is essential listening, a classic (though not Sabbath's best work), and a benchmark heavy rock record. Well worth the money!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 1, 2001

Paranoid is a classic metal album. Sabbath was the first metal band so all metal bands owe what they are to Black Sabbath. This was the heavist stuff around at the time it was released. War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man, and Faires Wear Boots are all highlights.
