Isham Jones led one of the most underrated jazz-influenced dance bands of the 1920-1924 period. Although the music throughout this British LP (17 titles in all) sounds somewhat primitive compared to what Fletcher Henderson would be playing after 1925, one can hear how advanced Jones' ensemble was when the music is placed in its proper historical context. Far from a "complete" set (Isham Jones recorded quite extensively during the era), this sampler does give one a strong introduction to the orchestra. Chief among the soloists was the talented but soon dated cornetist Louis Panico, one of the first brass stars; his laughing and occasionally crying solos were quite popular during the period. Interesting historical music that (if this release can be found) is easily recommended to vintage music collectors.
