Not Quite a Pioneer Kuro But Better Price

    By RoyR  Dec 11, 2008

Pros: Picuture quality, swivel base, 480hz

    Cons: Slightly reflective screen

After much on line research and actually viewing and comparing this set side by side to others in big box stores. I was trying to decide between a LCD and Plasma. All TV's set up at the big box stores are always much brighter (set up that way) due to the lighting, but this Panasonic really did an exceptional job producing blacks vs LCD's even under those conditions. If you like a bright picture the game mode on this TV will do that for you. This TV really has NO EQUAL dollar for dollar. The Pioneer Kuro's picture was only slightly better in my opinion and surely not worth the extra $1000-1600 in pricing difference. The THX mode I think greatly enhances the picture quality and is worth the money over the 50PZ80U which doesn't have THX (basically the only difference) The swivel base is really handy and only comes on this model also. The sound is not the greatest but is more than capable when veiwing most regular TV programs. I have the set hooked up to my old 100w Sony amp with Polk speakers when viewing DVD's so that takes care of any sound issues. Even with my old DVD player (no up scaling) the picture is really fantastic and has a lot of depth and realism to it. Unless you just want to be able to tell everyone that you have a Pioneer Kuro BUY THIS MODEL. You won't regret it. I made my purchase on line at abesofmaine.com as Amazon was sold out of this model at the time. A word of caution though if you purchase from an on line retailer, up selling is part of the deal and white glove service doesn't always mean it. Did receive a credit from abesofmaine for the white glove service I paid for but didn't receive.

    Excellent Value for Panasonic

    By Josh  Nov 10, 2008

Pros: Excellent color depth, affordable compared to the Sony XBR and higher priced brands

Cons: Needs space to breath. These models generate heat.

I purchased the 42 inch version from an online retailer (Abes of Maine) for 200-300 less than what major retailers (Sears) charge for the same model. The 20:000 to 1 constrast ratio is fantastic, and the color depth is much better than my father's Sony DLP HD-TV. Having both front and rear HDMI inputs is an added touch, and the unit fit nicely on my existing furniture. The only drawback is the heat, which can be resolved by positioning the unit farther away from a wall. Be sure to buy a very good power conditioner/surge protector!!!

I have the 42 inch model

    By Jim  Nov 10, 2008

Pros: outstanding blacks and depth of color

Cons: plasma reflects the light from windows

This so far is a great 42 inch plasma set at a great price. I bought mine from Sears on sale at the smaller store for 895 and yes it is 1080p. Easy set up and wonderful picture using satilite dish... I would recomend it highly... but like anything electronic time will tell.

By Nate  Nov 9, 2008 | 2 out of 2 found this Panasonic TH-50PZ800U review helpful

    Pros: 480 hz, natural color

Cons: sound quality could be better i guess

There is not much to complain about this television. I had to give it some sort of con because nothing is perfect. I think there are other televisions on the market with better sound, but not much comes close to the Panasonic picture quality on 1080p except the Sony XBR6 and Samsung Series 8 850. Those are both LCD's also. I am fully impressed with plasmas because of Panasonic and I would recommend a Panasonic plasma before any LCD. Stat for stat they are either better or the same. I sell televisions every day so I know tons about them.
