    GS 500 at one month

Pros: image quality, manual focusing, built quality

Cons: lack of headphones, battery life

I am cameroonian residing in South Africa with hobbies in photo and video.
The built quality of this camera is very good, inspires confidence. it is on the larger side but has a pleasant feel on holding and surprisingly light. i nevertheless feel the buttons on the right are not ergonomically well positioned. Maybe it is because of my big hands!
The videos are outstanding no matter the settings 4/3, 16/9 or Procinema. they seem to be oversaturated though, a pale red will appear on screen strawberry-like. i tried the procinema and i couldnt see the difference with the 16/9.
Still pictures are 4 Mb and seem quite decent for the camcorder but i dont really use the function as i have a good digital reflex.
the camcorder performs well in auto mode but the focus can be adjusted manually to be more selective. i am still getting use to it but results are impressive especially in the macro function.
there are 2 points of dissatisfaction though: the battery life time seems too short for me around 1h10 mn of intermittent recording. the second point is the lack of headphones. i dont get the idea behind its omission on such a high-end product.
the low-light function is very useful if there is the tiniest of light source. it does not compare though to the infrared of my previous sony that was pretty useful in filming in complete darkness.
I think reading the manual is as usually essential to get the most of this camera. there are a collection of other features that one has to understand for proper usage.
The softwares (MotionDV Studio and SweetMovie life)that come with the camera are completely useless for me, very limited functionnality. they dont even output on DVD. A more appropriate video editing software is primordial. I am using Pinnacle studio with satisfactory results.
The antishacking mechanism works well (OIS) and i am able to film steady with zoom on.
the wind noise reduction mechanism works very well also. i drove the car with my windows opened and filming; i was gently surprised that the sound of the radio in the car could be heard properly and the wind sound muffled.
i will be making a documentary about health issues in my community, and then i will be able to get better grip with this great camcorder.
I would strongly recommend this camcorder for advanced amateurs like me.

    Pros: Large ccd's , manual controls,True 16:9 & OSI

    Cons: No headphones

This is a great camcorder for the price. If you are looking at the Panasonic PV-GS line of camcorders, This is the way they should rate:

    1. PV-GS400
    2. PV-GS500
    3. PV-GS250
    4. PV-GS300
    5. PV-GS150

I dont care what the reviews say ! The 500 should not be compared to the 400! Becuase the 400 is way out of the 500's price range. The 400 is to hard to find , and at the 400's price, you might as well go High def !
If you read the Pro reveiws for the 250 , it got exellent reviews. the 500 , just gets average reviews. This makes no since to me!! If you do a comparison of the two camcorders side by side, The 500 is clearly a better camcorder! But these are the two camcorders that should be compared to each other. I dont care if the 500 is replacing the 400.
Pro's like to compare the 300 to the 250! But it should be compared to the 150. I dont care if the 300 is replacing the 250.These camcorders should be graded on their merits, not by comparisons anyway. And thats what I did!!! If you want a great camcorder at a great price, then buy the 500. I did!! I recieved mine on Oct 13, 2006 . Its a fantastic camcorder!! If you do side by side comparisons of all these camcorders , and forget what the pro reviewers say, and just judge them on the facts. Then I think, you will come up with the same rating I did!! I did not give you great detail in this reveiw. I leave that to the pro reveiws. Put forget the Pro reveiws opions, and stick to the facts! And the 500 wins!! Hands down!!

    Great camcorder

By Turbo  Aug 20, 2006 | 7 out of 8 found this Panasonic PV-GS500 review helpful

Pros: image quality, ease of use, great zoom

    Cons: no headphone jack

This is one excellent little camera. Aided by a good OIS (Optical Image Stabalization), the 12X zoom is phenomenal. Battery life is OK.

Controls are easy to learn & operate.

My wife talked me into buying an optional accessory kit - and I'm glad I did! Extra batteries, extra charger (which is universal), extra mini dv tapes, a zoom lense and a wide-angle lens... You know; just those little things that you never seem to have enough of in the basic package "kit" of any electronic device.
