    A perfect travel camera

By Michael  Aug 2, 2006 | 10 out of 10 found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5K review helpful

Pros: Long battery life, 2 AAs, 6x optical zoom, optical image stabilization, size, speed, good GUI

Cons: Some noise at high ISOs, no optical viewfinder

I bought this camera (the black version of the LZ5) for an extended trip to Europe to supplement my larger Lumix super-zoom. The size and weight make it ideal for travel. Easy to hold, no lens cap to lose, sharp pix, even in very low light, thanks to... the accurate optical image stabilization. It is important to experiment and read the manual to make the best use of this camera in differing situations- it comes with many interesting options (the "normal" mode is great for 80% of shots). Also, experiment with flash on/off. The camera has built in handy 14MB of flash memory, and I know it works with a 2 GB high-speed SD card. Movie mode is also fun, easy and good. Turns on quickly, time between shots negligible. Well made, rugged; large hi-res 2.5" LCD. The 6X optical (much more in digital range) is more than adequate for in-camera-before-taking-t
he-shot cropping, so your editing time later is greatly reduced, and results much better, even if you step down to 3 MP mode to save storage space. Very sharp, well saturated pix. As reviews will show you, high ISO settings in low light will result in some noise and artifacts, which may or may not bother you. There is software, such as NoiseNinja that can remove it. That said, I used to have a digicam without image stabilization, and my low light pix were usually blurry- not so with this camera, noise or not - I've taken some amazing hand-held night and cathedral photos without flash. This is my second Lumix camera, and I'll never buy any other camera that doesn't have this type of image stabilization- they're definitely on the right track here. Battery life is excellent, and standard AA rechargables work great- bring a few sets and leave the charger at home. Comparing the pictures made with this camera and my much larger, more expensive 12X zoom FZ20, they are virtually identical for all practical purposes. Manual controls, etc. are nice, but having a camera of the quality and size of the LZ5 is not much of a compromise, and in fact is much simpler and faster to use- you don't miss the shots you would getting out a larger camera (and don't attract unwanted attention). Some cameras are too small and unwieldy; this one is a perfect size for superior pictures with the minimum of fuss. Highly recommended.

    Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5

By Bryan  Feb 22, 2007 | 2 out of 2 found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5K review helpful

Pros: build quality, IS, zoom, clear menus

Cons: thumbgrip, no viewfinder, picture quality, user guide

Unimpressed by image quality viewed at 100%; against a background of complementary colour I found outlines unclear. On a dull day whites have a blue tinge until you nudge the settings towards warm, when reds become overstated. Impatient with setting ...custom white balance, I wanted more inbuilt options. There was not enough space among the buttons for my right thumb, so that EV menu kept popping up. Because of poor thumbgrip I couldn't spare a hand to shade the screen on a bright day, and wished there were a little viewfinder. It is designed to sit way off-centre on a tripod because you soon need to change batteries. Build was solid, chunky, robust. The 6X zoom was a delight and the stabilizer was magic but I had to get rid of it because I simply couldn't shoot one-handed, which is a problem when you walk with a stick. Read more Less

Pros: Everything is great on this camera

Cons: a little bit of shutter lag and the LCD moniter is hard to see in sun.

Three words for this camera: I love it. I did alot of research on many digital cameras. I had gotten down to three and this gem was'nt even on the list. I didn't even knew it existed until I went to the store to purchase a camera and started ...to ask questions and looking at the features. This camera won me over. I've tried everything on this camera and its been wonderful. Takes great pictures and you can crop your pictures on the camera. Very easy to use. I would highly recommend it. Read more Less

    A Nice Little Camera

By HenryH  Dec 25, 2006 | 1 out of 1 found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5K review helpful

Pros: Good solid pictures, great zoom, simple

Cons: No optical viewfinder, noisy images, bad flash placement

I just got this baby for Christmas. After about four hours of playing with it, I have to say that I like it a lot. While it isn't great in low-light, its a great bargain for all of the features and image quality.

    Good point and shoot

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 22, 2008

Pros: Fits in my coat pocket, decent quality

Cons: Shutter and screen lag poor red eye

I've had it for just over a year. Good for point and shoot. Shutter lag and double flash red eye gets frustrating taking candid and sports shots. I would like more controls, but then I think I'm asking too much from a $300 camera. I'll bu...y a SLR for the more advanced photos and use this for when a SLR is too bulky. Read more Less
