It's all about that 12x optical zoom

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 17, 2004 | 42 out of 42 found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20K review helpful

Pros: Easy to use; Much more than just a point and shoot

Cons: You really do need to learn how to best use it

Takes outstanding photos, you get spoiled by that Lecia 12x optical zoom. Like any good camera that offers a lot of features, taking the time to learn how to use them will produce even better photos. Make sure to also order a spare battery and a larg...er SD card along with the camera so you won't be held up in taking your first shots. (Panasonic only includes a tiny 16 mb SD card which fills up fast at about 2 mb a shot. A back up battery lets you continue to shoot while the other recharges.) SD prices have really come down as capacity has increased - a 1 GB hi-speed card would be a good investment now, 2 GB cards are on the way. Read more Less

A Great Digital for Great Pictures

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 12, 2005 | 9 out of 9 found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20K review helpful

Pros: Large F2.8 Lens 12x zoom, style, feel, its good in low light

Cons: Shutter button placement, needs EVF rubber eye piece

WOW... Panasonic has taken on the Old School Boys of camera makers and is stiff competition. This looks, feels, and performs like a camera should, this is not a point and shoot toy, but the fun is, when set the cam on Program you can still point and ...shoot, so its great for someone who is working on a second upgrade to digital cameras.People who never really thought about picture taking are suddenly caught up with learning all the funtions that are offered. There is a bit of a learning curve, but after reading the manual, some practice and on-line web sites on photography you get the pic fever.I love the lithion Ion battery, takes 90 min. to charge, lasts hundreds of pics or a number of weeks ,depending on how many photos you take.. and the battery has a 5 year life with thousands of charges with no memory to worry about.Things you shoud get...a second battery for backup, a bigger SD card like a 256, a lens cap string, and a carry bag. This is my second after having an HP 2meg this 5 meg makes all the diffrence when croping and editing and developing hard copy pictures for albums....Highly Recommended... Read more Less

    best value for the Dollar

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 5, 2005 | 6 out of 6 found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20K review helpful

    Pros: 12 X Zoom and 5 mega pixe;

    Cons: 16 meg memory card

I have had this camera for 6 months now and I truly can't find anything wrong with it. I also have a Cannon A1 film camera with a 35 to 205 zoom lens. This Lens on the panisonic is equivlent to a 35 to 436 Zoom. I have twice the lens at 1/6 the w...eight. The pictures (up to 8 X 10) are indistinguishable from my film camera. I haven't made anything bigger. The FZ-20 Has all the features of my film camera and it is so much easier to use. I gave support a 3 rating only because I have had no cause to use them and don't know how helpfull they would be. The 16 meg card is a joke and marketing should do something about it. The movie mode isn't the best but the camera is primarily a still camera and not a movie camera. I truly beleive for the money this is the best camera out there. Read more Less

Loved It ! Loved It ! Loved It !

Pros: "Feels Good", 12x Leica Lense,Image Stabilizer

Cons: Get's a little heavy on the neck after using all day.

Being a professional photographer some years ago, I have had my share of cameras. This camera has made me happier than any I have ever owned. It is easy to use for a person who will go over the manual page by page to learn to use it's many featu...res. To use only as a point and shoot, would be like buying a luxury car to go to the grocery. There are cheaper "just point and shoot" cameras around. It took me years to go digital, as I never thought the quality of the photos was good enough. The image quality attained from this camera is more than satisfying. There is nothing about this camera that I dislike except it starts to feel a little weighty on the neck toward the end of a touring day. Read more Less

    The Best Camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 10, 2005 | 3 out of 4 found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20K review helpful

Pros: Quality of pictures, best point and shoot to own without buyig an expensive SLR.

    Cons: Many features to learn

It's a great camera even at retail price. Highly recommended to anyone and prefer it over my Canon Rebel. Pictures are great indoors and outdoors. A starter SLR feel camera that's well worth the bucks.

    One word: Versatile

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 19, 2007 | 2 out of 2 found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20K review helpful

Pros: very versatile, 12x zoom, features++

Cons: No RAW file setting, noisy pictures at higher ISO settings; manual focus nearly useless

I have owned this camera for 2 years and have taken many thousands of shots with it. This camera has a lot of the features you'd find on DSLRs without the pricetag. I've used it on a lot of hikes, macro shots, portraits, landscapes. etc. The... Macro settings work wonderfully. The large Leica lens gathers plenty of light. 12x zoom is hard to beat at this price level. A tripod is a must if you plan to use the far end of that zoom range very much. (This is true for any camera with such a zoom). ISO 80 produces solid pictures with a little "acceptable" noise. If you plan to do any cropping, the pictures are too noisy above 100 ISO and unacceptable at the top-end 400 ISO). However, every time I think of getting a DSLR with a better sensor, I cringe at the memories of having to buy and change lenses on my old film SLR. The proprietary battery will produce about 200 pictures (fewer if you're using the flash), so unless you have a spare battery, you won't need more than a 512MB SD RAM card. (At maximum resolution the 512MB card will hold about 200 shots.) The battery comes with an external charger and will not recharge from the USB cable. Startup of the camera takes about 5 seconds because the lens has to extend. This is a bit long, but it has been improved in the FZ-30 and FZ-50 where front lens is fixed (stationary). If you plan to use filters/attachments, buy an after-market adapter ring (made for this camera) that will let you use 62mm filters. Don't use the adapter that comes with the camera. It requires 72mm filters which are about 50% more expensive than their 62 mm counterparts. This camera is not a pocket camera. Get a case and use a neck strap! (one is included) This camera has a lot of moving parts. Read more Less

Much more than a Point and Shoot!!!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 26, 2007 | 1 out of 1 found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20K review helpful

Pros: SLR Functionality. Ease of Use. Superb Lens.

Cons: Noisy CCD. Poor low light response. Focus Issues.

Make no mistake this is a camera that shines in the bang for bucks stakes. I made the transition from film to digital with a great deal of research and as always it comes down to how much are you prepared to spend. I think as a wildlife and macro pho...tographer I have taken this camera to its limits and I can state clearly that they are the following: It is capable of A3 prints but only in perfect light conditions. The CCD is noisy and low light response is disappointing. The LCD viewfinder is ok but not so hot if you are trying to focus on that detail. The depth of field and focal range of the lens is also let down by the viewfinder. In essence the resolution of the viewfinder is not good enough to show the lens's capabilities. I have often taken a shot which on instant review I thought hopeless only to find that it is actually much richer and promising on download. The Lieca lens is a peach. Quality through and through and it alone justifies the price, especially if you can source a second hand bargain. Overall, for a pre-professional digital SLR camera it is highly recommended. If your serious about photography you will probably outgrow it quickly.. However.. I think many will keep it rather than trade and just buy that "more pro" unit. After all, it is an all in one camera with SLR capabilities for a silly price. Why part with it? Just keep it for those days when you dont need or want to carry a bag full of lenses. This camera despite its limitations is worthy of any pro's kit collection. As for the successors (ie. FZ30 & FZ50) personally I would wait until Panasonic decide to get serious and put a decent CCD sensor to match the Lieca's lense capability, and upgrade the viewfinder to make any difference. Otherwise.. just enjoy. It is great little package. Read more Less
