Synopsis: Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Synopis: Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a thrilling, violent fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain. Ivana Baquero stars as Ofelia, a young girl who moves with her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), into the home of Captain Vidal (Sergi López), in an abandoned mill in the middle of dark, dangerous woods. Vidal is leading his team of soldiers against resistance fighters--and he will do whatever is necessary to kill every last one of them. As Vidal bosses around the pregnant Carmen, a flying creature leads Ofelia through a garden labyrinth and into an underground cave ruled by Pan (HELLBOY's Doug Jones), who believes that Ofelia might be the lost princess of this strange yet magical place. To prove she is royalty, Ofelia must complete three tasks, each more difficult and terrifying than the previous one. Meanwhile, Vidal is becoming more and more paranoid, torturing and murdering seemingly at will. Del Toro (THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, HELLBOY, CRONOS) creates a marvelous battle between good and evil, between heroes and villains, in both the real world aboveground and the mystical land below. Baquero gives a compelling performance as the terrorized Ofelia, who is befriended by Mercedes (Maribel Verdú), a woman who harbors some secrets of her own. Stellar production design, superb special effects, and a stirring score by Javier Navarrete add to the scary fun. Selected as the closing-night entry in the 2006 New York Film Festival, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a captivating story that is not for the squeamish.Awards: Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

Maestro - See all Maestro's reviews Pros: The movie is original. It is next to impossible to find a movie such as this.
Cons: The movie, sadly, like so many dvd's today is sold in separate 1 and 2-disc formats. So those who want the bonus features are forced to pay more for the 2-disc version.
Guillermo del Toro is known for directing dark movies, much like Tim Burton. Del Toro most recently helmed Blade II and the equally dark and forboding Hellboy. Pan's Labyrinth is different, though, from the previously named movies. This movie is one that would make perhaps even Burton himself flinch. Forget that the movie is considered a foreign language film, since the entire thing is done in Spanish. The English sub-titles are a great help to those who do not speak the language. The language helps set it apart since there is such a lack of foreign language films in America's theaters. It is not, however a foreign language film for the artsy crowd. It is nowehere at that level. This is a far different kind of movie altogether.
Del Toro created a work in this movie that could be classified as fantasy. It could also be considered a war movie, in that it is based around the end of WWII, with a main character much like Hitler, although it takes place in the mountains of Spain. What is stranger is that Del Toro directly takes a page from mythology in making Ofelia the princess of the underworld, although she does not even know it until she is told by one of her father's aides. Even after this is revealed, audiences are left to wonder throughout the world if the faun (who is the king's aide) is really trying to help Ofelia or is actually perhaps some demon. He looks the part of a demon just by his looks, which perhaps is why Ofelia is so wary of him and the world, in which she enters after meeting him.
There is no one way to truly describe this movie. It is possibly one of the most tragic, beautiful and extremely disturbing movies to come along in years. This is not just because of the violence of the vile Captain (who has no real name. He is just called Captain by every character in the movie), but also because of scenes such as where she encounters a monster who bites the heads off of the fairies who accompany her on one of her tasks. The third and final task is the one which truly makes both Ofelia and audiences alike wonder if the faun is truly trying to help her. The task in question will not be revealed here for those who perhaps have yet to see the movie and have some interest in it. But it is truly something that leads to a very unexpected ending. Again, this is something, too which will not be given away. It is, however, worth sitting through the almost two hour movie.
This movie is not intended for the casual fan of fantasy or even war movies. Those who are unaccustomed to that world would be best advised to perhaps leave this movie on the shelf. Those who know that world, though, are encouraged to at least watch this movie one time and judge it for themselves. Even as disturbing as this movie bcomes at some points, it at least has one thing going for it. That one thing is that this movie is original for the most part. There are fantasy movies, and then there is Pan's Labyrinth; one of the most original fantasy movies to come along in years. ...

Pros: Great acting, supurb story
Cons: no English voice-overs.
Finally, a movie that is original with a story that is captivating and wanting more. To be honest, I wasnât expecting much other than to just set back and âreadâ a movie, but I was pleasantly surprised at how freely the story flowed and about how deep the character involvement was. This is a must see for any movie fan that is wanting to get away from the cheesy blue-screen action flicks, over done mushy romance, or way to âkiddyâ movies. It is also family friendly (except to those that canât speak Spanish or read). ...
