Pagoda formed in Washington, D.C., after Ben Licciardi (vocals/keyboards/guitar) needed to record some songs for Lazyline Records. He was joined by Kevin O'Meara (drums), Raj Gadhia (bass/keyboards), and Adrian Carroll (guitar), with Carroll's country band, Shortstack, lending standup bass and lap steel. After the release of Pagoda's debut, Dearly Departed, O'Meara was replaced by Elmer Sharp.
