This was a landmark record for Jeff and Bev. this was the record that showed their prefect harmonies, guitar and keyboards in dissident sync, and the "Mr Blue Sky" soaring that brought ELO to American fame.

    Quite The Encore

I never thought ELO could follow up "A New World Record" with such an excellent album, especially a double-sided one. Although I marginally side with the previous release, "Out of The Blue" show Jeff's strength in writing ballads, pop songs & concert...os.A few of the songs could have been more lyrically strong, but much of the feel of this album doesn't always lend itself to that. ELO's Sgt. Pepper

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 27, 2001

this is the best of ELO. they never got any better than this album. unfortunatly they forgot to put any bad songs on the album so when listening you cant skip any tracks, thus forcing you to listen to the album in its entirety every time.

    top-notch follow-up!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 16, 2001

How could The Electric Light Orchestra possibly release a follow-up album worthy enough to match "A New World Record"? The answer came with the release of the double-album entitled "Out Of The Blue". Originally slated to be called "Out Of This World...", "Out Of The Blue" certainly lived up to the high expectations left after "A New World Record". The timing was perfect for the release of a double-album, coming off the success of "Face The Music" and "A New World Record". This double-album is the result of what happens when genious songwriter Jeff Lynne locks himself away in seclusion for several weeks, intent on writing new material. He emerges with a masterpiece! The songs are magnificent, ranging from the silly "Jungle", to the ambitious Concerto For a Rainy Day, which is four fantastic songs that make up one whole side of the album, the fourth being the hit single "Mr.Blue Sky". Other hits include "Turn To Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Wild West Hero", and to a certain extent, the instrumental song entitled "The Whale" which received a lot of FM airplay at the time. The album shows a wide variety of Lynne's diversive songwriting skills, from rockers like "Night In The City" and "Birmingham Blues", to the Mexican-flavored "Across The Border", to the absolutely beautiful "Starlight" and "Sweet Is The Night". The writing and producing from Lynne is beyond superb. The orchestrations surround the basic tracks and bring them fully to life. The lead and harmony vocals are absolutely magnificent, the best yet on any ELO album. The sound produced on "Out Of The Blue" was so giant, that hearing the group perform live was somewhat of a letdown, simply because it was impossible to recreate this giant sound on stage with only seven band members.(It was reported that the band had to resort to using taped backing tracks during their concerts to help create the giant sound from the album). "Out Of The Blue" is indeed a masterpiece, and was never again matched by following ELO albums. Even the original album packaging (on vinyl) was a collectors item, containing all lyrics to the songs, a poster of the group, an insert with offers to purchase ELO merchandise, and a cardboard punch-out (insert tab-A into slot-B) of the now-famous ELO spaceship which graced the cover of the album. "Out Of The Blue" is most certainly the favorite of many ELO fans. Those who doubt these words merely need to give the album (CD) a listen to become believers. "Believe Me Now". :) Read more Less

    The Best...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 3, 2000

Arguably the best "double album" released in the rock era! Great theme project. "Concerto for a Rainy Day" contains four of ELO's best songs!

If you don't have it, you don't have ELO!

    The greatest work of ELO

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 1, 2000

This is by far the best album by ELO. Tons of thick, deep harmonys and rich orchestral movements that mix smoothly with the modern keyboards and guitars. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius producing most of the vocals and a slough of other Instruments. ...The number of different instruments used to make this album is incredible! If you even remotely like ELO you have to listen to this. BUY IT ASAP! Read more Less
