    Our Time Is Coming

    By rkp18  Jun 12, 2006

Pros: songs that any or everyone could get into, without alienating a casual listener or the heaviest house head.

Cons: does not truly highlight what makes them such "masters" at what they do.

first of all, anyone who is interested in MAW is at true music lover. this is a group that will always stand the test of time, no matter how you catergorise them. be their work as dj's, producers, remixers & with a an obvious ear for talent & lov...e for a wide range of music this album does not take any of their fans someplace new, but displays without a doubt their ability to make good music to dance to, with just enough kick to get others interested or take notice. the stand out tracks are you send me, work, backfired latin lover & lean on me. it obviously showcases the r&b influences that have helped to make them who they are. no one could ever doubt the likes of india, patti austin, james ingram (past duet collaborators) & stephanie mills.these songs remind the old of what makes them great while keeping them fresh & updated for the young. nothing could have came as a greater surprise the the song "work" which is a soca song (not dancehall) made to move their caribbean set of fans, myself included (jamaican). the rest of the songs on the album just make the grade, while including short musical interludes which highlights only to a small degree where there coming from than where the're going. overall, you truly can't be disappointed with the effort or the outcome, as with this album is more a reminder of who they are & what they do & where they are right now.this album proves that they still have the formula, but just not willing to go out on a limb as they usually would,at least right now anyway. MAW Are Ahead Of Their Time!

    By Reginald  Sep 22, 2004

    Pros: Very Danceable

    Cons: None

These guys have only just begun to jam! Anyone who is a DJ is very likely to own a considerable amount of MAW records. This latest offering only waters your mouth for the 12" releases. "Like A Butterfly (You Send Me)", "Backfired&...quot;, "Our Time Is Coming", "Every Now And Then" and "Latin Lover" are my favorites. Put in the cd and start dancin'! Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Even after ten years of club hits and dozens of the best house tracks of the decade, Masters at Work, the duo of Little Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, kept a surprisingly low profile -- especially for such grand achievements. (Even their side project, Nuyorican Soul, is probably more well known than their day job.) Finally putting together a second "proper" LP almost ten years after the first, Vega and Gonzalez don't do much to surprise fans, though the subtleties inherent in the way they do it ably demonstrate their staying power. Like a latter-day Salsoul Orchestra -- though with far more bite to their backing tracks -- Masters at Work set up some gorgeous productions for guest vocalists like Stephanie Mills and Billie: track after track of smooth, lush house music with impeccably tight arrangements, impossibly precise playing, and just enough energy to get the reluctant out on the dancefloor. The duo also does well when expanding the house blueprint; granted, nearly the best ...work of their career came on the Latin record Nuyorican Soul, but that's where their heritage lies. The Afro-beat attack of "MAW Expensive" (a quasi-cover of Fela's "Expensive Shit") drives with the force of the original, and "Pienso en Ti (I Think of You)" has all the subtleties of a classic late-'70s production from the Fania label (home to salsa stars including Vega's uncle, Hector Lavoe). The duo also salutes their roots in the urban RB of the '70s and '80s, recruiting James Ingram, Patti Austin, and Roy Ayers for powerhouse workouts. And best of all, La India, one of the most expressive talents in contemporary salsa (also Vega's wife), guests on the highlight, the extended house jam "Backfired." Though it may not quite reach the heights after ten years of expectations, Our Time Is Coming does bode well for the second decade of Masters at Work. - John Bush, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Masters at Work

The duo of "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez are the preeminent production/remix team in house music, their nom de plume Masters at Work standing behind dozens of the biggest club hits and remixes of their time. Effectively soundtracking the freewheeling American nightclub scene of the 1990s, Vega and Gonzalez blended their love of the disparate music coming... Read more
