    Best I've ever had

    By Bruce S  Dec 24, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Onkyo TX-NR801 review helpful

Pros: Net Tune, All the hookups, Power and Sound

Cons: Fairly complicated at first. It's like a computer

What sold me on this was net tune. I put all my CD's on my wireless Laptop (About 15 gigs) and play them through the Receiver. Limitless playlists. I had a 200 CD player that I don't even use anymore. I have a Niles speaker control system that I run 6 sets of speakers off the "B" speaker output throughout the house. I'm sure it has some drawbacks but I don't what they are.

Great sound, but Net Tune problems

By rsbrux  Feb 19, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Onkyo TX-NR801 review helpful

Pros: Sound, Power, variety of effectsandsound formats

Cons: Net Tune on-screen display (OSD) unreliable

The NR-801E delivers great sound and a tremendous variety of configurations. The setup isn't always easy though. Commonly used functions like bass and treble adjust or "late night" mode are hidden in submenus. The "late night" feature is only available for Dolby digital sound. My biggest peeve is the Net Audio function. The PC software is easy enough to install and operate, and it delivers good sound. I just can't get the on screen display (OSD) with the two remote control keypresses as described in the manual. OSD shows up fine for receiver setup, but I have only seen it twice for Net Audio. I seem to have gotten it by accident and cannot repeat these fleeting successes. Trying to select program sources without OSD is possible with the built in receiver display, but hardly practical. Another peeve is the radio station selection. When I actually had an OSD, I tried about 30 of the jazz and classical stations listed and could connect to only about 6 of them. This is a good unit, but not as mature as I expected for something that has already been on the market for a year or two. The dealer has been responsive so far, but I have yet to find an Onkyo support contact here in Europe.
