this album toured great.....these tunes do well LIVE! excellent for any rock collection.! radio ignores todd due to his ignoring of mainstream commericalism......as a result too many people do not hear his innovative and incredible music....
o yea im still alive and so is Todd theres only a hand full of artist thats been around as long as Todd and still kik ass like he does on this album hey i even bought my son a bad religion album the same time i got this lifes good the trip kid
Other than the INDIVIDUALIST-like rantings of
"Jerk" and "The Surf Talks", ONE LONG YEAR, Todd
Rundgren's latest, breezes by in far less time. If one is
looking for a collection of tunes that should've been
'80s-'90s B-sides and outtakes, ONE LONG YEAR should
satisfy. "Where Does The Time Go" could've easily lifted
2ND WIND out of the doldrums, and "Buffalo Grass"
could've segued into and out of NO WORLD ORDER like most
of the other tunes from that disc. That Holy Grail
number, though. Whew. Would there have been enough space
on A CAPPELLA to fit it in with "Miracle In The
Bazaar"?
As a fan, I adore everything Mr. Rundgren puts out,
even though the gimmick on ONE LONG YEAR seems to be
his on-line subscription service rather than the
music. If there were more than one NEARLY HUMAN for
every three INDIVIDUALISTs, I would gather Mr.
Rundgren, and Patronet (his on-line service), would stand
to benefit from a far wider subscription base. As it
stands, I prefer the Japanese live discs. As long as they
won't ever have any ukelele ditties on them.
In the ninties Todd offered a varied and uneven
mix of products. The gimmicky: "live" studio album,
SECOND WIND; the aging rocker responding to the
unignorable rap trend: NO WORLD ORDER; re-working the hits:
WITH A TWIST; mixtures of Motown and the Metaphysical:
NEARLY HUMAN; just plain weird: THE INDIVIDUALIST (and
there must have been at least one other). Not really
much of a decade for "the Kid."
Jump to new
century and Todd's back in the studio with a time warp to
the late 70's: ONE LONG YEAR. Melodic, playful,
honest and certainly minus the self-consciousness of the
last century, Todd renews his relationship with love,
melody and his guitar.
Not a half-bad CD for an old
guy. He's got me interested again.
