Great movie and story, Charles Bronson vs Henry Fonda in a collision course. Classic gun fight showdown built up to the end ...like "The good, the bad, and the ugly"x

    Poetry in motion

Like some type of poetic fairy tale, this film offers some of the best visuals in cinematic history. A terrific story and Henry Fonda gives such a versatile performance, it is easy to see why Fonda was a gifted man. Like all sergio leone films, this... movie should be seen in widescreen. If you love this film, watch "A fistful of dynamite" with coburn and steiger. Again, widescreen!!!! Read more Less

    Outstanding Cinematic Gem

    Pros: Finally released on DVD

Cons: That the movie wasn't even longer.

Once Upon a Time in the West is filled with hundreds of references -- some obvious, some subtle -- of movies that influenced director Sergio Leone, from Johnny Guitar to movies by John Ford. Leone basically wrapped many classic scenes from these into... one, allowing the movie to deliberately pace its way through. It's almost symbolizing the building of the railroad, which is central to the plot. You just can't rush building such an epic endeavor. Leone's intention isn't about the climactic showdown, but the dramatic visuals leading to them. So watch this movie when you're wide awake. Not that it's boring; Leone's style isn't about how many people he can put in the grave or how many buildings that can be blown up. Leone filmed this for people who actually think, so watch for some creative styles. For instance, we know that Jill McBain waited at the station for over 2 hours in the movie's span of 10 seconds after showing the station clock and then showing Jill's watch! And it's quite interesting to see plenty of references to water in such a parched desert. A film for movie fans who think and who have a visual side, it's gorgeous. Read more Less

Great film finally making it to DVD

    By Christopher  Oct 14, 2003

Pros: Fonda as a bad guy. Bronson looking his best.

Cons: Dubbing w/ Leone movies is always a treat...

One of the greatest westerns. Leone is a master in this genre His adaptations are unique in all the westerns, but he has a great sense of character subtleness which helps fuel the film. Each one has a something to bring, build upon, and raise the ...stakes in a masterful climatic production. As each of the great classic films finally makes it to DVD, I only wonder why it's taking so long!! Read more Less

Great Movie - I hope it goes to DVD soon

    By Paul  May 20, 2003

My favorite spaghetti western! I agree with the previous reviewer who likened this movie to a western fairy tale - each of the main characters even has their own song in the movie to enhance that effect. Great story, performances & directing (and Cla...udia is real eye candy)! A definite DVD purchase when it is available! Read more Less

    Best Western Ever...

    By John  Apr 27, 2001

and one of the best films I've ever seen. Henry Fonda as the villain Frank was casting genius, and I think it is his best performance. Tell Paramount Home Entertainment you want this on Letterbox DVD!

    Where's the DVD?

    By lrandolp  Mar 26, 2001

This is the most "cold-blooded" western I've ever seen! This movie is truly an epic, with a flair for the dramatic. The Henry Fonda vs Charles Bronson showdown was nothing less than awesome.

Again, can someone tell me when the DVD is coming out?

Once Upon a Time In the West

    By Bruce  Mar 13, 2001

One of the best movies I've ever seen. Is it me or does this movie seem a liitle overlooked? Fonda, Robards, Bronson a mouth watering Claudia Cardinale, Ennio Morricone's music, its a top shelf film. I think its Leone's best. Fonda holding up ...in an authentic Indian desert cave dwelling...come on. Read more Less
