In one of the recurring gags of ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA, attempts to take Wong Fei Hung's picture always fail. The failure to capture the image of Wong (Jet Li) serves as an appropriate metaphor for the place of the Ching Dynasty folk hero in Chinese cultural memory. A legendary master of a variety of kung fu styles, Wong has been subject to numerous interpretations in dime novels and films since the 1930s. In the late 1970s an irreverent portrait of the young Wong Fei Hung emerged in DRUNKEN MASTER. In director Tsui Hark's hand, the beloved historical figure is given the full lionized treatment as he fights for dignity and self-determination against Western imperialists. A revisionist drama that recalls the struggle of the small-property owner fighting for her land in Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, Hark's epic is both a tragic and heroic examination of China's transition to modernity. Like the best of Hark's films (ZU: WARRIORS OF THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN), ONCE UPON A TIME contains imaginative fight sequences, including "no-shadow" kicks and a thrilling battle using bamboo ladders.

    Wow! It's got everything.

This film has got it all. It's an epic, historical, action, adventure, romance type film - masterpiece. Jet Lee plays this geezer (the name escapes me) who must prevent the Westerners and their Western ways from infiltrating the East. Why? - can't r...emember. He also has to deal with the likes of the Imperial Chinese Army, or something like that. All you need to know is that he is the good guy - and everyone else is a bad guy. Anyhow, nevermind all this. The plot is actually very good, I just can't quite remember it, but what I do remember are the amazing fight sequences. They really will blow you away. Much 'wireplay' is used, meaning that our Jet performs some superhuman and awe inspiring stunts. Watch out for the superb fight scene against the really bad Chinese dude in the haybarn type thing. Great. If you like Jet Lee, then this is the film for you. If you like martial arts films then this is the film for you. In fact, whoever you are, and what ever it is that you like watching, this is the next film that you must see. An Epic masterpiece. P.S. It's very long. Read more Less

I am a fan of Swordsman, Drunken Master, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Iron Monkey, etc. This film did not draw me in. If you buy it, it is for the very few action sequences and disjointed storyline--a combination that, coupled with the british trad...e years in china, make for a movie not imperative to own. I cannot believe there are 3 of them! (And since many say this is the best of the 3 I would just look elsewhere for good action) Read more Less
