Synopsis: On the Beach (2000)
Synopis: The year is 2006; America has released a nuclear bomb on Taiwan leaving only Australia in its wake. A small crew aboard a U.S. Navy submarine led by Commander Dwight Towers (Assante) manages to survive the devastating blast, but it isn't long before they're forced to place the vessel under the Australian government's command. They're assigned a life threatening task; to enter radioactive waters and find an insane scientist (Brown) who's been in solitude while waiting for what he believes to be the final "end." Before the mission begins, the commander meets the scientist's beautiful ex-fiancée (Ward), to whom he immediately takes a liking. A romantic liaison ensues, but the mission at hand threatens their love, and the lives of the entire crew. A remake of the 1959 classic based on the novel by Nevil Shute.Features: On the Beach (2000)

On the Beach (2000)
, February 2, 2001Reviewer: mikehs4b - See all mikehs4b's reviewsHad no idea what I was in for when I picked up this movie last minute on a rainy day. Had never heard of it, never seen it advertised. Little did I know how POWERFUL the next three hours were going to be. A unique and emotionally gripping portrayal of the last days on Earth as a United States submarine crew seeks to sustain life and it's meaning following a quick and decisive exchange of nuclear warheads between the U.S. and Taiwan. The director pulls you along like Scrooge's ghosts as you are brought face to face with each character's struggle to find and nourish hope in the path of unsurmountable odds. From the eyes of a principled and honorable submarine commander to those of the foolhardy and reckless to the protective eyes of a husband and father, the audience must eventually make the same choice as our friends on the screen: how to die and why. This movie is a touching and brutal reminder of that which really matters. You'll cry. And you'll thank God... for life, for love. And for a second chance. Not for the faint of heart. ...

A little sappy in some places, but overall worth checking out. I wonder what we would do if if we knew we only had a few weeks to live?
