    Very tough camera

By Tan  Apr 26, 2006 | 18 out of 18 found this Olympus Stylus 720 SW review helpful

    Pros: Extreme Versatility

Cons: Only 15 fps video, Ok battery life

This is a great camera. I bought it right before I went to Florida for Spring Break. The camera looks too nice to be as tough as the manufacturer claims it to be. It's waterproof up to 10 ft underwater for up to 1 hour and shockproof from up to 5... ft. I took it to the beach. I swam and took pictures with manatees with this camera. Mangrove forests, beach, swimming pool, it doesn't matter. I took it everywhere. Great pictures everytime. Low lighting does get tricky if you do a lot of indoor pictures. The camera has a "use available light" setting, but the resolution is limited and the picture is a bit grainy. This setting increases both shutter-speed and ISO to capture low light images. Higher ISO, more grain. You can use the "indoor portrait" setting instead but you need to have either very steady hands or a tripod to make full use of the 7.1 MP because the shutter-speed is slower. I've done this and the pictures turned out great so long as the subjects stayed very still. The camera has no explicitly labeled manual mode but you can adjust ISO from 64 to 1600. The only con is probably the battery life and the 15 fps video mode. It is a mere 3 hours because of the superbright 2.5" LCD screen and I wish the video capture can do 30 fps. All in all, this is a camera for the outdoors. I've taken it surfing, snorkeling, hiking, and everywhere in between. I even used it to take pictures of my professor's notes on the blackboard. There is even a built-in alarm clock (it's very loud, I put it next to my pillow before bed and it blows my ears out come morning to wake me up.) My friends are jealous and they all want my camera. Even people at the pool can't believe its waterproof. Everyone says "No way dude!" Read more Less

    Perfect camera for any use

By Tinso  May 2, 2006 | 11 out of 12 found this Olympus Stylus 720 SW review helpful

Pros: Waterproof, shockproof, slim and fast

Cons: Image quality could be better, only 15 fps video, Panoramic function only available with Olympus memory card

I bought it for the features of the camera, since I love to go to the beach and where I live rains a lot. Its a good shot and go camera. Image quality is pretty good but not on par with the Canon SD550 but I can live with it, I have seen worst. I ...got it from eBay with a bunch of accesories for the same price of the stores here. its a great camera

By Jeremy  Jan 6, 2007 | 3 out of 3 found this Olympus Stylus 720 SW review helpful

Pros: it opens fast for when theres a picture i need to take right away and the battery last a long time

    Cons: picutres can be blurry

I got the camera as a Christmas present and I really enjoy it. I haven’t had the chance to test out the shock proof feature yet but I’m sure it works, and the water proof feature I tried out in the sink. It takes good pictures underwater bu...t some water got its way into the lens and I was afraid it was going to damage the internal system to the camera. So I will not take it underwater again. It takes good pictures and opens fast. It is silent and makes no noise opening or closing either. It’s really slim and fits in my pocket. I really like it and I’m sure others would too. Well worth considering

By Robert  Feb 17, 2007 | 2 out of 2 found this Olympus Stylus 720 SW review helpful

Pros: Waterproof, Pictures not as bad as some reviews would have you believe

Cons: Shutter lag with flash in auto, poor battery life, water trapped by lens cover

This is a great little camera with a few flaws. I got one because I do allot of water sports and love to snorkel. If you want really good quality pictures then buy a good SLR. However if you want a portable go anywhere camera then this may be the one... for you? I did quite allot of research on-line before buying this camera (I would recommend you do this too). One of my concerns was poor image quality. This has not proved to be a problem, images are consistently better than my canon ixus 800 IS (thought the cannon is capable of taking better pictures). Noise is present but not an issue for me. Pictures appear very sharp . Negatives that I didn't expect from reviews: Shutter lag when used with flash (not caused by flash charging), Poor battery life, water gets trapped in the body and then gets smeared on the front of the lens by the cover until it clears, the LCD isn't easy to use in bright sun. The other thing to be aware of is that the manual recommends replacing the cover seals for the battery and USB port annually! I hope this is useful to you. Read more Less

    I LOVE THIS CAMERA!

By Porah  Mar 15, 2007 | 1 out of 1 found this Olympus Stylus 720 SW review helpful

Pros: Waterproof, Shockproof, Compact, Pretty light

Cons: The image quality isnt to great if you change the settings

I got his camera as a gift from my hubbs. Im pretty much in love with this camera. The only thing that i don't like is that the pictures come out huge when i upload it into my computer and my computer doesnt have much space to it takes a really l...ong time to open the picture. So i made the picture size smaller in the camera settings, but now the image quality isn't the same. The picture doesn't come out as beautiful as the full blown up one. Well i guess I will have to upgrade my computer soon =). I also really recommend this camera to people with young children. Because if the kids get to it they can't really destroy it because it is shock proof and waterproof. Now when my 4 yr old spills something near it or he plays with it I don't really have to freak out anymore lol. Read more Less

    Great point and shoot camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 1, 2007 | 1 out of 1 found this Olympus Stylus 720 SW review helpful

Pros: Very durable, waterproof, and great images

    Cons: None

This is a great camera at a very affordable price. It's a very solid and durable camera unlike most of the plastic cameras in this class. The menu and controls are easy to navigate and there is a vast variety of shooting modes. The waterproof featu...re was my deciding factor in the purchase, but once using it, I would have purchased it just for the camera and image quality alone. This is a great addition to any photographers camera collection. A must have. Read more Less

    Just buy a new one

    By Christine  Dec 14, 2007

    Pros: looks good

    Cons: doesn't last

I have had the camera just over a year and the flash does not work anymore. It costs $154 to get it fixed from Olympus. I have talked with three other people who have had the same problem. The functions are very confusing. Plus you have to keep rese...tting the functions. So if you are taking lots of pictures at a time, make sure your patient. Pictures are randomly blurry. The manuals are confusing. Look for another camera. Save yourself from frustration and confusing. Read more Less

It's cool that you can take it underwater, BUT....

    By lxw  Jan 15, 2007

    Pros: Small, waterproof, versatile

Cons: Blurry pix, looong shutter lag, long time between pictures, crappy manual, lacks exposure bracketing (or does it?)

I got this camera just before a trip to Tahiti when my trusty Sony cybershot died after accompanying me all around the world (including Antarctica) for three years, and it was awesome to be able to snorkel with it. It's even better in a swimming ...pool, and it kind of trips people out to see you dipping a digital cam in the water. Unfortunately, when you see a shark swimming by and push the shutter, it takes so long for the camera to take that you *might* get a pic of the shark's tail, if you are lucky and it's a slow-swimming shark. It's another couple of seconds before you can take the next picture. Boo. This happens on dry land, too, to an irritating degree. You basically can't take action shots unless you are really good at anticipating them a couple of seconds in advance. If your subjects are always still life, this won't be a problem for you. I was also disappointed that it didn't have features that you find in most $500 cameras, like exposure bracketing (for HDR), RAW file format, and the ability to manually fine-tune the exposure settings (maybe it has that, but even the "advanced" manual is woefully incomplete). It is small and waterproof, and it does all the fun stuff like making movies with sound, but in retrospect I would definitely just go for another cybershot and get a waterproof housing for it -- or just get a disposable waterproof camera.
