Pro Reviews: Old Original Kokomo Blues [P-Vine]

  • All Music Guide

James Arnold (he became known as Kokomo Arnold after he covered Scrapper Blackwell's "Kokomo Blues" as "Old Original Kokomo Blues" in 1934) had a fast and distinctive slide guitar sound that makes nearly every one of the 88 sides he recorded for Decca Records between 1934 and 1938 a complete delight, and although it usually takes a back seat to his guitar skills, his singing was also energetic, varied and often quite striking. This PVine set collects his key tracks, including "Old Original Kokomo Blues," the ubiquitous "Milk Cow Blues," the bustling "The Twelves" and "Stop, Look and Listen," making this a decent introduction to one of the finest stylists of the early country blues.
