Probably the Best album of the year

By Daniel  Apr 24, 2004 | 1 out of 2 found this Old Crow Medicine Show review helpful

    Pros: Youthful and spirited

Cons: Most people will never hear it

It is Hard to describe the Old Crowes properly, in a manner that does them Justice. High Lonesome Jug band Rock n Roll with enough energy and talent to start a revival all by themselves. If the dreaded feared Banjo suddenly becomes hip , it will be t...hese boys fault. Good Luck boys! Read more Less

It just Can't get better than this

    By Ramsey  Aug 22, 2005

Pros: It just makes you feel good, lyrics you can sing along to, and the music doesn't get much better.

Cons: Being seen as a Country Band...I think that there type of music is beyond a single genre...

This is one of those albums that you buy and every song on it is fantastic...although their are favorites of course. It starts with "Tell it To Me" which will hook you immediatley with its fast pace and singable lyrics. My next favorite is ..."Tear it Down" the lead singer sounds like a great singer that you could only hear on 1920's radio. Then of course it ends with the most incredible song they have..."Wagon Wheel" I have heard from friends, and seen online that this song was written by Bobby Dylan but I don't know if that is true or not, either way this song is the best on the album. • All Music Guide

Old Crow Medicine Show is an allacoustic quintet from four states whose members met in New York City and currently reside in Nash Vegas. Their storied beginnings include a North American crosscontinent ramble while they learned their instruments and how to play together, eventually ending up playing on the street in front of the Grand Ole Opry before being asked to the stage some weeks later. Their selftitled debut album is equal parts Woody Guthrie's dust bowl weariness and Cisco Houston's rambling code of the road, Phil Ochs' view of a passing America, the Kingston Trio's wideeyed enthusiastic earnestness, the New Christy Minstrels' sense of community, Doc and Merle Watson's homegrown blues as informed by Bill Monroe, Beat Generation lamentations, forlorn 1960s idealism, and the musical mindset that fueled America's original folk revival from the 1950s as it moved toward rockabilly. In other words, this record is informed by ghosts but executed in flesh, blood, sweat, and laughter. W...hether the tunes are covers from antiquity ("CC Rider," "Poor Man," "Tell It to Me") or originals by fiddler and vocalist Ketch Secor and his songwriting and singing partner, Willie Watson ("Trials Troubles," "Hard to Tell," "We're in This Together"), the feel is the same: passion, humor, and relentless drive to get to the heart of the tune and put it across. There is so much enthusiasm here, so much willingness and fire, that it would be hard to do anything but want to sing along. Thoroughly enjoyable, wonderfully raw and sinewy, Old Crow Medicine Show may be evoking the sounds of the old string bands, but they do it with a crackling rock roll energy. - Thom Jurek, All Music Guide Read more Less

Old Crow Medicine Show

Mountain music revivalists Old Crow Medicine Show spin traditional folk and bluegrass yarns with a rock and roll attitude.
