Anyone who has frequented Jewish-American gatherings has likely been exposed to klezmer music, a style that parallels Arab, Armenian, Greek and Turkish music in its emphasis on modal playing, but has a strong identity all its own. The Shirim Klezmer Orchestra takes a very pop-influenced and Americanized approach to klezmer on ...Of Angels And Horseradish. This isn't a band that will be accused of taking itself too seriously. From infectious instrumentals like "Jesse's Tantz" and "The Black Wedding" to "And The Angels Sing" and "Coney Island" (both of which feature the vocal talents of Rosalie Gerut and Betty Silberman), this generally lighthearted CD leaves no doubt that Shirim is intent on having fun.
