Pro Reviews: Obscene Underground, Vol. 1

  • All Music Guide

Obscene Underground put Freaky Flow on the map, and the album's remarkable success (considering it was released rather humbly by Stickman Records relative to his later work for Moonshine) led him to internationally acclaim in the early '00s. Up until the release of this album in 1999, Freaky Flow's acclaim had been mostly reserved to Toronto, where he was a proven talent and had been for years. However, Toronto is rather removed from the rest of North America, particularly California. The release of Obscene Underground helped spread the word throughout North America -- from New York and Florida to Los Angeles and Vancouver -- that Freaky Flow was indeed in the Western Hemisphere's upper echelon of drum'n'bass DJs. It was perhaps no surprise when Moonshine wooed him with a multiple-album deal, making Freaky Flow a household name within the North American dance scene.

One of the most recognized DJs in Toronto, North America's drum'n'bass mecca, Freaky Flow began extending his reach in the late '90s, signing an album deal with Moonshine and touring relentlessly. By the early 2000s, his efforts paid large dividends: he had become one of North America's top drum'n'bass DJs, alongside other luminaries such as Dieselboy and AK1200. Furthe... Read more
