Pros: feel good... harmony is rediculously good
Cons: too many constant sorrows on the cd
i'm 17 and listen to rap, and i love this music. I just watched the movie in English class, and the music is just so rich and the harmonies are out of this world. it helps if you have watched the movie, rather than just listening to the music, because the premise behind some of the songs is awesome.
Great movie, awesome soundtrack
Loved the movie and the album.
Loved this album. Will definitely buy it. It is feel good music. Many good songs. My favorites are "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow", "I'll Fly Away", "You Are My Sunshine", and "Down To The River to Pray".
Boy, aren't you just Mr./Mrs. Positive****!!!
The album and movie are both great. It is not supposed to be a great new movie, with all kinds of special effects. Big deal, I like it anyway!!!!!
****Sarcasm, in case you couldn't tell, while you were busy putting down albums.
The soundtrack to 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' is a fantastic album. I have to be honnest, I don't own it but I'm singing 'Down In The River To Pray' and I decided I HAD to see the movie. Yes, I was blown away by the movie but I don't think the movie would have been nearly as good if the music hadn't been such a huge part of it. The harmonies are so tight and soulful. I wish out Choir could put the same kind of soul into our songs that are in the songs on this album. Regardless of the fact that the people who sang on this album are professionals, it just went together perfectly and it just sounded so natural. This album has turned me onto country. It doesn't even have a cheesy sort of country sound though. Hopefully you can get the clips and listen (because I can't!) because 30 seconds of 'Down In the River...' or any other song on there will just brighten your day.
this is not my cup of tea, but i really like this album. it deserved album of the year.
This is for music lovers who are tired of the same old, same old and are craving something different. The songs are melodious and catchy (and the movie was great too). Whoever thought hillbilly music would turn out to be so cool?
Well, Hyperreo asked for someone who is under the retirement age who enjoyed this soundtrack, and you've found me. I, too, am from TN - in fact, I am about to recieve my degree in music. I grew up singing this music. This music, like it or not, is a part of our heritage. There is an honesty in this sound that cannot be duplicated by the music industry machine - if you'll notice, few of the performers on the album are well known names; rather, people who sing this kind of music for more than just a living have been chosen to perform these pieces of Southern Americana. Bluegrass is not my favorite type of music, not by a long shot - but this album has something different, something special. I'll admit, the four different versions of Man Of Constant Sorrow do get a bit tedious, but it is necessary to take into account the whole album before riding it off as completely redundant, as other reviewers have. I loved this album, loved the movie, and found both of them extremely intelligent and entertaining.
I usually listen to metal music. I watched the movie and was totally amazed at the soundtrack. I went out and bought the cd 1 week after watching the movie.
The song from this CD, "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow", is a soul-stirring song. The words alone are thought-provoking, but the song's tune takes you on a musical story up & down valleys. On this CD, there are two versions of this song. One is more has more instruments & additional singers, but are both great. They bring back that old time country sound. A lot of complex harmony and delicate melodies. They use a lot of madoline, guitar, and fiddle which really makes up country of a by-passed era.
This CD ocupies a permanent spot in the changer. Don't miss the "Down From the Mountain" documentary on DVD that features all performers from this CD.
I have just recently been turned onto the
wonderful sounds of bluegrass music as it was
part of the evolution of music. I LOVE this CD
and the movie wasn't too shabby either. It's a
refreshing change from the everyday of the
radio and movie industries.
I really liked the blends of voices on many
of the songs. Emmylou, Allison, and Gillian are
so inspirational to myself as I am a musician,
as well as a music lover. I just can't say
enough wonderful things about this CD.
I equally enjoyed the movie. I just loved the
three main characters. I couldn't believe the
roll John Goodman played, though I think he did
a fine job. This is a movie I do intend on
owning pretty quickly.
Thank you for letting me voice my opinions.
This is the music of a time that needs to be remembered. This is good Southern "old time" music done by people of today. In my opinion, the musical score for this movie, which is a fantastic adaptation in itself, is a perfect fit. The Coen Brothers are exceptionally imaginative.
The best thing for me about this album is that people are finally learning about one of the greatest musicians of our time-Alison Krause. She has been around for almost 15 years now, but stays in the background doing incredible music. Now that she is one of the featured artists on an album that is selling, maybe more people will realize what I have known for years, no ones voice or music compares. Her voice is that of an angels and the music matches that lofty voice. Other great unknown bluegrass musicians contribute as well like Lilian Welch in a duet with Alison. This CD, without the assistance of any radio play in any format is proving that great music can still sell.
After watching the off-beat, somewhat eclectic movie, the music seemed to stay in my mind for quite some time. The movie was in the same vain as Fargo with it's underlying humor and really excellent storyline. After watching it I found out it was bascially a southern-fried, depression-era production of "A Greek Odyssey" by Homer. What a concept and it was pulled off in excellent fasion.
This album is one of the best I've heard, and have found a radio station here in St. Louis which plays this style, KDHX, which you can listen to here: http://www.kdhx.org/
Enjoy the album, it's great!
A great album - not something you'd hear everyday but exceptional all the same. "I am a man of constant sorrow" is, of course, my fav track. Like i said, it rocks!
I don't normally go in for this type of music but this whole album is good. Its the kind of music you listen to and say "what the heck am I listening to... wait this is pretty cool."
one of the best ive heard
<EOM>
LOVED THE MOVIE, AND LOVED THE MUSIC, ITS HARD TO FIND GOOD MUSIC LIKE THAT ANYMORE.
