Pros: You think it'll be a dumb hick movie
Cons: It turns out to be an amazing film with excellent cast
When I first saw this film, I was interested in seeing how George Clooney would appear. To my surprise it's a extremely funny film, about 3 escape convicts down south, during the depression era of the 1900's just as slavery is making headway for newly freed african americans. It's one adventure after the next as the 3 escape convicts are trying to avoid recapture and get home to their loved ones. Pursued by a dogged southern lawman and his co-horts, George Clooney and his 2 jailmates run into one halarious situation after another. Clooney's character is seeking riches and wealth throughout their long trek to freedom. The ending is a surprise I won't reveal. But it's well worth the viewing. You'll be surprised to find Clooney and friends did their own singing in this film and even won an Oscar that year for best movie sound track. If you love non-stop comedy, downhome country singing and a film that will touch your heart and put FAITH back in your life. Then watch, buy or rent this DVD. It's worth every penny and even brings a little Jesus back to your heart!
Pros: Funny, Light, Quirky
Cons: Shows Signs of Sell-Out
I enjoyed "O' Brother", it is a beautiful film that has stood up to repeated viewings. However, in their lighter fare and less-complex story (not to mention inclusion of Clooney) the Coens begin to show their sell-out colors. The characters are great,of course, but missing are many of the regular bit actors from previous films. There is still a lot of subtext and very clever dialogue, as well as a dream-like KKK song/dance number. Again, a fantastic meeting of commercial and art interested, just tragically tilted a little too far toward commerce. Luckily, the Coens gave us one more masterpiece in "The Man Who Wasn't There".
Pros: Soundtrack
Cons: It Had To End
George Clooney has madqe some bad movies in his career. And he has made one really bad one. but O Brother Where Art Thou? is Clooney's breakout. Clooney and co. made a vivid historical movie that is both funny and thought provoking. I had never known that Tommy Johnson was a real blues musician until ater I saw the movie and researched it. Their encounter with George "Babyface" Nelson was obviously false, but George Nelson was a real public enemy. John Goodman's supporting role added to the movie. The soundtrack, much like in Good Night and Good Luck is both seperate from and a part of the movie itself. The movie is almost a celebration of American Roots music itself. Given the movie was based on a classic piece of literature, but Homer would be proud if he were alive today to see it.
Pros: Hilarious
Cons: None
Need to watch
Only Raising Arizona competes for out and out hilarity for my $5.95!
LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. GREAT MUSIC AS WELL. LIKE A CROSS OF BLUEGRASS AND FOLK. WENT OUT AND BOUGHT THE SOUNDTRAC
I think that it's a great movies
Good lines that are memorable and well executed. I like "We thought you was a toad." I also like the Soggy Bottom Boys.
George is a great actor, and I have to say I love all his movies. He has a charm about him on screen, and just like Brad Pitt, can go from one Sexy guy to a scruffy guy, and no matter what still look good. I hope he doesn't plan on getting out of the acting career for awhile.
Funny from beginning to end.
The Coen bros. have done it again, this time with a Bluegrass backdrop. Haven't you ever wanted to see life from a hillbilly perspective? Well, now you can, and the incomparable George Clooney can be your guide. Some clever dialog and an absolutely knockout soundtrack has made mainstream music fans converts of our native bluegrass sounds. Strum that banjo!
Definately off the beaten path. Clooney really shows his ability as a comedic actor in this one (though he is a bit over the top in a few scenes). Soundtrack is superb (I do believe it was the Coens' attempt to revive this type music, in addition to making a movie). I think the only people that would dislike this movie are the ones that regard Swarzenegger movies as fine cinema!
If you're just some idiot looking for a good
movie watch this, it's pretty entertaining. But
if you're a guy like me, a real Coen fan, a guy
who loved Fink, Hudsucker, Miller, Fargo,
Lebowski and others, don't watch! This is the
second worst film that the Coens have made...
the worst was of course Raising Arizona.
One of the worst movies ever made!! It is not even worth your time. The only reason I give it one star is because the soundtrack is awesome!
This is by far George Clooney's best role. The soundtrack behind the stunning visuals provides a positive punch. I will definitely add this to my Christmas list!
Definitely one of the best, if not THE best film of the year. If you are a Coen Bros. fan, you will not be disappointed. I especially enjoyed how they used the soundtrack to add more depth into the moving pictures they captured. Brilliant!!!
My husband and I watched this movie twice in one night and laughed all the way through both times. George Clooney and the rest of the cast are wonderful. I think everyone would appreciate the wit in this movie. It will be on my to buy christmas list for everyone in my family
Excellent movie! A treasure in itself.
This is an absoultely delightful film. Loosely based on Homer's Oddesey, "O Brother, Where Art Thou" is a classic blend of Greek literature (even down to the cyclops) and the Depression Era South. The movie features a fabulous soundtrack. George Clooney heads a strong cast in telling this colorful story.
The DVD transfer is vibrant in both sight and sound.
I just watched this wonderful film. I wish I hadn't passed it over for so long. I grew up in Mississippi and it reminded me of that time. The story was completely believable and the music was outstanding. Even those who normally don't listen to this music will find it touching. George Clooney was at his absolute best! I will be on the lookout for future Coen films.
Watched this movie twice and laughed just as hard the second time. It was a great movie and the music was too good to be true. If you didn't enjoy it the first time, watch it the second time and it will grow on you.
I saw this one twice in theater and twice on DVD. It's an excellent, if quirky movie. It's NOT for everyone however. Some won't like the music. Some won't care for the episodic structure of the film. Some won't like the occasional loose end or nonsensical happening.
But this is a movie, escapism, humor and even some social commentary. It's highly original and the three main characters are worth the price of admission!
What I liked most about this film was the music. Some of these songs are almost haunting. I just wish more people would be open minded enough to enjoy this type of film. Great Show!
A very well crafted tale superbly acted with an amazing cast: George Clooney, Charles Durning, and Holly Hunter. However, it contains "country music"... traditional music that many people will either hate or love. This is the first time I have seen this type of traditional music in this type of venue.
This movie was funny and confusing at the same time.In general, it wasn't that good.George Clooney should have stayed at E.R.
