With "Nothing Natural," Lush took its first steps out of the shadow of the Cocteau Twins. Though its angelic vocals and swirling, hypnotic guitar still evoke the Cocteaus (whose Robin Guthrie produces, further muddying the waters), an insistent bassline and energetic drums clearly align the song with the Ecstasyfueled clubpop coming out of Manchesterin short, it's danceable, and since when could you say that about a Cocteaus confection? This American single adds two of three remaining tracks from the British Black Spring EP, the gossamer "God's Gift" and "Monochrome," which could well be a Cocteaus outtake (ahem)why Reprise chose to replace Black Spring's sublime cover of late Beach Boy Dennis Wilson's "Fallin' in Love" with an abbreviated radio edit of "Nothing Natural" is a mystery.
