I love Coppola's version, Browning's version, Dreyer's Vampyr, Interview with a Vampire, and The Hunger; but none of them match the creepy chill of Nosferatu. Along with Metropolis and Caligari, this film expresses post-WWI German paranoia, tension, and dread. Not exactly light viewing. The images are darkly poetic: the shadow of a claw clutching a girls heart, a sleepwalking girl who sacrifices her soul in a dream, a procession of coffins down a cobblestone street, a girl waiting for her lover in a seaside graveyard...
This is required viewing for all students of cinema and horror within the cinema. This is not the suave vampire that Lugosi would create within the next decade. This is walking death. A must.
If your a serious film history fan, you've seen it. If you want to be a serious film history fan, you have to it.
