Publisher Notes: North America, Volume 1

  • Frances Trollope, Anthony's mother, was the author of the classic, acerbic, sharply observed critique DOMESTIC MANNERS OF THE AMERICANS. Anthony himself had always wanted to write his own book about the country, and after his second trip there, in 1861-62, he found the opportunity to do so. His visit took place during the Civil War, and he traveled to all the states that were still part of the Union. In 36 chapters, including four on his Canadian travels, he shares his insights and observations on the war, women's rights, education, American hotels, and American writers. The book was well received among Americans, who welcomed its benign view of their country and saw it as a corrective to Mrs. Trollope's much more critical work. In England, however, it was much less popular; his countrymen seemed to agree with Trollope's own judgment, in his autobiography, that it is "tedious and confused.
