    What a Gem

    By Brian  Apr 19, 2003

"Nonsuch" is a pleasure. Easy on the ears, well crafted and very listenable. For some reasons this release went under without much fanfare - pity. Stanout cuts are "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead", which was released to the general public, and my fa...vorite, "My Bird Performs". Great release from a band that deserves better. *amazing*

Few albums I own (which is quite a few) rise to this level of quality on every track. The music is fresh while at the same time familiar and very accessible. Reflects a maturity and skill in crafting that is sometimes hard to find in the pop music g...enre. Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Since Skylarking, each XTC album was carefully composed and crafted, and Nonsuch is no different. Working with producer Gus Dudgeon (Elton John), XTC crafted their most immaculate album to date with Nonsuch. A measured and reflective record, recalling the Beach Boys more than the Beatles, the album retains some of their late-'80s psychedelic flourishes, but those have been integrated into an elaborate, lush pop setting that falls somewhere between Skylarking and Oranges and Lemons. While it lacks the thematic unity of Skylarking, as well as the grandstanding eclecticism of Oranges and Lemons, Nonsuch is in many ways more musically consistent, presenting a set of 17 wonderfully detailed and immediately catchy pop songs, ranging from the relatively rocking "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" to the sweet "Holly Up on Poppy." Occasionally, the album dips slightly lyrically -- Moulding's "The Smartest Monkeys" and "War Dance" are a little too preachy -- but never musically, making Nonsuch a ...modest, minor masterpiece. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

XTC

XTC was one of the smartest -- and catchiest -- British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s. From the tense, jerky riffs of their early singles to the lushly arranged, meticulous pop of their later albums, XTC's music has always been driven by the hook-laden songwriting of guitarist Andy Partridge and bassist Colin Moulding.
